In 1986, Whoopi Goldberg became the first Black actress to win a Golden Globe award. However, it wasn't until 2021 that another Black woman won a Golden Globe in succession to Goldberg's example. This award-winning actress is Andra Day, and she won the award as Best Actress for her role as Billie Holiday in a film titled The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
Far Out Magazine shares regarding this space between both award-winning actresses, "Day becomes only the second Black woman to take home an award, coming nearly 35 years after Whoopi Goldberg became the first for her role in The Color Purple." This win was especially momentous as this was "Day’s first acting nomination and win at the Globes and also became the first winner within this category for a film that was debuted via a streaming platform."Entertainment Weekly adds that her skills are not limited to acting, as Day's "contributions to the film's soundtrack were also recognized by the Golden Globes, as her original song "Tigress & Tweed"...also scored a nomination at the 2021 ceremony." This outstanding performance has earned Day much recognition and opens the door for future black actors to continue in her footsteps.
