Job Description
Nursing Assistant-Medical/Surgical/Telemetry

The Nursing Assistant will be responsible for providing safe, effective care to inpatients on a busy medical/surgical/telemetry ward.
The incumbent performs, but is not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Bathing, personal hygiene, assisting with feeding, taking-recording-reporting vital signs accurately, assisting ambulation and other duties or care as directed by Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Observing patients who may be confused or have other cognitive issues providing safe environment and reports to nurse when condition changes.
  • Initiating emergency action in life threatening situations such as cardiac and /or respiratory arrest, massive bleeding, shock, or assaultive behavior and alerts licensed personal immediately.
  • Documenting vital signs and activities of daily living in the electronic record or paper record keeping system.

    Work Schedule: Hours are varied and may include weekends and holidays

COVERAGE: The following are requirements for appointment as a Nursing Assistant in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). These requirements apply to all VHA Nursing Assistants in the GS-621 series.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: The following are the basic requirements for employment as a VHA Nursing Assistant. To qualify for appointment as a Nursing Assistant, all applicants must:
Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States.

Education or Training: Have one year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.

Physical Requirements: Meet the physical requirements for this position according to VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment physical, including the possibility of a drug screen.

English Language Proficiency: Nursing Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, paragraph 3j.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
Creditable Experience:
Knowledge of Current Practices: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the current practice.
Quality of Experience: To be creditable, Nursing Assistant experience must be documented on the application or resume and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.

GS-5 Nursing Assistant (Full Performance Level)
Experience: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree
AND
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs below.
1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Preferred Experience: 3-4 years of nursing assistance

Physical Requirements: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Depending on the essential duties of a specific position, usable vision, color vision, hearing, or speech may be required. However, in most cases, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant for appointment. The loss or impairment of a specific function may be compensated for by the satisfactory use of a prosthesis or mechanical aid. The work of the Nursing Assistant requires long periods of walking (up to 8 hours); standing (up to 8 hours); repeated bending (up to 8 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, recurring heavy lifting (45 pounds and over); heavy carrying (45 pounds and over); reaching above shoulder, positioning and supporting of patients weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Applicants tentatively selected for positions involving direct patient care may be subject to a health evaluation prior to appointment; applicants who refuse may be denied employment with VA.

6.
