Job Description
Recreation Assistant (Tai Chi Instructor-Whole Health)

The Tia Chi Instructor position is located in the Whole Health section, of the Nurse Executive department, at the Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care system. As a Recreation Assistant you will assist in improving the Veterans Wellbeing by coordinating activities such as Tai Chi & Qigong and Meditation for the purpose of promoting, restoring, and preserving health and well-being of Veterans at the VA Medical Center, and supporting additional recreational activities. The position requires knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of therapeutic recreation. The position requires familiarity with the physical and mental capabilities, emotional and psychological considerations, and interests of individuals for whom recreational activities are planned. Demonstrates knowledge of general exercise programs and exercise equipment and safety factors in demonstrating and observing use of exercise equipment. When working one-on-one with Veterans, the Tai Chi/Qigong instructor determines the veterans degree of interaction with activities what action may be needed to enhance their participation.
The duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Instructs Veterans on the safe use of Tai Chi/Qigong, practices, ensures the safety of patients during all activities on an off station; uses good judgment and tact when confronted with problems arising between people both in the community and at the Medical Center.
  • Reviews and recommends changes concerning the effectiveness of ongoing recreational programs from the standpoint of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments, and program objectives.
  • Act as a resource to the Veteran population, NWI staff and facility leadership to facilitate care coordination.
  • Coordinates with other staff members concerning the use of the use of the Tai Chi/Qigong facilities and develops and maintains a calendar of program activities.
  • Ensures that all supply and equipment requirements are identified/justified and requested through proper channels.
  • Provides simple accurate instruction in the areas of the our Wellbeing programs Tai Chi/Qigong services.


Work schedule: Monday - Friday, day shifts with limited as needed evenings and weekends.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
  • One year of experience as a Tia Chi and or Qigong Instructor.
  • Ability to prepare and set up Ta Chi and or Qigong setting and equipment to support scheduled events and activities.
  • Experience as an aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service.
  • Ability to lead Tai Chi and or Qigong classes for well-being and maintenance of health.
  • Experience in Preparing class format and content appropriate for the type of class and level of participants.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements: The work requires considerable physical exertion in order to perform the assigned duties including; standing, sitting, bending, for long periods of time.
