Job Description
Inpatient Pharmacy Technician
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Obtains proper medication or materials in the proper strength and dosage form for the filling of inpatient orders.
  • Determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medication.
  • Affixes proper labels and records the proper data on dispensing document.
  • Prepares intravenous solutions (sterile products), total parental nutrition, chemotherapy products, and dialysis solutions.
  • Maintains and demonstrates IV competency in accordance with USP 797 Requirements.
  • Fills unit dose carts.
  • Prepackages unit dose, liquid, and IV medications for pharmacy stock.
  • Maintains inventory on floors and clinical areas with ward stock medications.
  • Performs monthly expiration checks both inside the pharmacy and in medication storage areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Rotating daylight, evening and weekend shifts including some holidays and overnight coverage.

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS- 6 and above.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.


Preferred Experience:

The position is above the full performance level for pharmacy technicians which requires the incumbent to be PTCB certified to qualify for this position. Significant inpatient hospital pharmacy experience (> 3 years) is highly preferred.

Specialized experience in compounding intravenous chemotherapy products as well as experience with pharmacy automation such as unit dose packaging equipment and automated dispensing cabinets is preferable.

Grade Determinations:
(a) Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*)
(b) Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. The resume/CV submitted must show sufficient evidence of experience and must support the submitted answers to the below KSAs.
  1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
  2. Knowledge of the operational and care of automated equipment.
  3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
  4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
  5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
  6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication order
(d) Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-6.
Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting: 45 pounds and over, Heavy carrying 45 pounds and over, use of fingers and both hands required. Must be able to walk for 4 hours, stand for 7 hours and repeated bending for 2 hours. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other eye. Ability to distinguish basic colors and ability to distinguish shades of colors. Hearing required (aid permitted). Mental and emotional stability.
