Job Description
Physician (General Surgery)

Seeking a full-time or part-time board certified/board eligible physician for a position in the General Surgery. This position functions as a staff General Surgeon who maintains professional, technical and administrative knowledge, competencies and skills to provide effective care and timely, quality responses to patients' clinical needs and problems in both the clinic and operating room settings. Surgeon works under the supervision of the Chief, Surgery Service. Incumbent is accountable for assuring the effective delivery of care while meeting compliance standards. Surgeon examines, diagnoses, and treats or prescribes course of treatment for patients having disorders, malformations, diseases, and/or injuries and is required to deliver surgical procedures in the operating room and clinical areas. Responsibilities include performing surgical operations, outpatient ambulatory surgical procedures and clinic duties, and outpatient and inpatient surgery consultations for new and established patients; Participate in ward/ICU rounds and any other relevant activities as necessary for initial and follow-up patient care; is expected to follow each patient through the full continuum of care process to include admissions, discharges, performing histories and physicals when pre-surgical evaluation is not available, requesting and writing orders for diagnostic tests and procedures for pre-op, prior to surgery, and completing informed consents; will be required to perform, but not limited to surgical procedures, both upper and lower GI endoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The General Surgeon must have operative skills in common surgical procedures in general surgery (such as hernias, laparoscopic, chole-cystectomy, colon resection, breast, etc.) and provide follow-up for patients who have undergone surgery and provide assessment and counseling for patients who develop a problem related to a surgery; responsible for educating patients and family members; will participate in the rotation of on-call duties per on-call schedule (night, weekend and holiday call may be required); will adhere to policies and procedures regarding the completion of all required orders, operation/procedure notes/reports, discharge summaries, progress notes, clinical reminders, all other required medical documentation, and performance measures; will ensure the most effective delivery of care, while meeting and exceeding compliance, Joint Commission and VA Central Office performance measure standards; will train and provide supervision for residents and mid-levels in all aspects of their duties as required; and performs other directly related duties as required.

This position is a full-time position with a primary appointment at the VA hospital and a secondary gratis faculty appointment in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville. Candidates must be eligible for a gratis faculty appointment at the University of Louisville to be involved in the training of medical students and residents.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Selection criteria for this position which would be considered enhancing:
- Board Certification/Board eligibility in Surgery
- Certified/trained in Robotic surgery is highly preferred
- Recent experience performing both upper and lower GI endoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), hernias, laparoscopic, chole-cystectomy, colon resection, breast, etc.
- ACLS
- BLS

Physical Requirements: In accordance with 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1614.203, the individual selected must be physically and mentally able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform the essential functions of this position without endangering the health and safety of self and others. The physical requirements of this position may include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching (overhead), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
