Job Description
Substance Use Disorder/ Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Psychologist

This position is located in the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service (MH&BSS) of the Robley Rex VAMC. This full time position consists of a psychologist that participates in a full range of psychotherapeutic, diagnostic and training activities. S/he is responsible for the provision of both Substance Use Disorders (SUD) treatment and outpatient posttraumatic stress disorder services as part of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team. This individual will perform assessments, level of care determinations, evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy for Veterans struggling with both substance abuse and PTSD. This individual will participate in collaborative treatment planning and program development as part of both the Substance Use Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Clinical teams. This individual will act as a liaison and consultant to the inpatient unit on the treatment and management of individuals with this dual diagnosis. This individual will provide consultation and education to the facility regarding the care of Veterans with both substance use disorders and PTSD. Through education, consultation and advocacy, s/he will ensure this population has services available to them that meet the current evidence based standards.

S/he may participate in the supervision of psychology students at various levels or training and will serve as consultant to other disciplines in the area of behavioral and mental health. S/he also participates in the professional activities of the Mental Health & Behavioral Science Service and the Medical Center at the direction or approval of the Supervisor and, ultimately, the Chief of Mental Health. These activities may include, but are not necessarily limited to: administrative committees of Mental Health and/or the Medical Center, continuing education, training, research, and treatment/program evaluation. S/he functions as a member of the Louisville VAMC Medical Staff with full clinical privileges. He/she complies with all documentation and coding procedures, as well as national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients.

Duty Station This individual will work 2-3 days a week at the Dupont Clinic, with the remaining days, providing services at either the main faciltiy on Zorn Avenue, or at other Community B?ased Outpatient Clinics.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8-4:30.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPS) at the time the program was completed.
  • Completed a professional psychology internship training program that was accredited by APA
  • Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a state, territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
  • Advanced knowledge of the assessment and evidence based treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder as a result of combat exposure.
  • Advanced knowledge of the assessment and evidence based treatment of substance use disorders.
  • Ability to effectively and concisely convey information utilizing verbal, written and graphic methods, to include writing policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to consult across inter-professional teams.
Grade Determinations:
GS-13: Staff Psychologist (Full Performance Level) Experience - at least 2 years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS-12. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.
  2. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
  3. Knowledge of clinical research literature.
Psychologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of psychological services consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate at this level. Psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapies and other interventions such as behavioral health and community interventions.
Creditable experience can be obtained through paid or non-paid employment providing psychological work or through participating in a supervised postdoctoral psychology training program (i.e., fellowship or residency). Psychological work experience must have occurred after the doctoral degree was obtained and must have the required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with current professional psychology practice. Professional psychology practice includes but is not limited to the following psychology-oriented job duties: providing professional clinical services, conducting research, carrying out education and training activities, carrying out program evaluation activities, clinical consultation, supervision and administration.

The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommended the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed in that specific grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary, but it requires periods of walking, standing, bending, or climbing and employee may carry light items such as books, instruments, lap tops and other similar materials. Light Lifting (under 15 pounds); Light Carrying (Under 15 pounds); Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted).
