Job Description
Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist

The position serves as a Biomedical Support Specialist at the VA Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Analyzes, develops, plans, certifies and corrects system malfunctions on complex microprocessor based equipment and systems that have vitally interrelated, and sometimes, dispersed subsystems.
  • Plans and performs scheduled maintenance and completes unscheduled repairs on equipment to ensure that it is operating and calibrated properly, and complies with all applicable codes and standards. Troubleshoots equipment problems and takes corrective action to restore device to full operational level. Identifies replacement parts, supplies, or tools required and requisitions as necessary, or requests service from outside sources.
  • Evaluates corrective action alternatives for cost-effectiveness, considering device repair history, age and expected remaining lifetime user needs and parts availability.
  • Recommends equipment replacement In lieu of repair.
  • Identifies interim solutions to minimize detrimental impact on patient care should parts or outside service not be readily available.
  • Maintains an adequate spare parts inventory to help reduce any adverse impact on patient care.
  • Serves as a technical advisor and consultant to the Biomedical Engineer, Supervisory BMET, and clinical and administrative personnel in new equipment evaluation and purchase; technical equipment systems development and review; biomedical related project design and construction review; and the need for service contracts.
  • Trains other Biomedical Engineering Technician Imaging Specialists in equipment maintenance of radiological and nuclear medicine systems.
  • Assists in identification of training needs and instructs equipment operators in correct equipment usage, operator-level preventive maintenance, and electrical safety.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:applying a range of principles and practices to equipment with technical requirements and information technology (IT) interrelationships; installing, repairing, maintaining, testing, inspecting, aligning, and calibrating medical equipment and systems including medical IT equipment systems; performing biomedical equipment control, operator training, and consultation functions; requisitioning parts, supplies, tools, and equipment from vendor sources; serving as a technical consultant pertaining to medical equipment technology; performing evaluations of equipment specifications and recommending selection of replacement and additional medical equipment; knowledge of the characteristics, capabilities, installation, and configuration of medical equipment and its associated networks and the protocols governing the transmission of medical information and data; knowledge of computer technology including networks, operating systems, and applications software. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title; duties; month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.   • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you mut have Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to do the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.. OR,
  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the second year and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements: The work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration and the technical, academic, and mental demands are high. You will work under conditions of extreme stress due to the critical nature of work performed and its impact on the quality of care provided and patients' well-being. You must interact effectively with all levels of medical center staff and remain calm and analytical even under stress. In emergency situations involving medical equipment, you must exercise Initiative, creativity, and sound technical judgment to resolve problems and meet deadlines, often outside of Incumbent's control. Work assignments involve bench and field work, standing, bending, and remaining in cramped or awkward positions. Objects weighing up to 40 pounds may be handled.
