Job Description
Supervisory Social Worker

The incumbent is required to conduct, evaluate, and coordinate the execution of the program. This includes coordination of day-to-day staffing schedules, coordination of staff productivity, coordination of program/staff efficiency, coordination of
program/staffing cost effectiveness, coordination of quality performance, outcomes and/or coordination of clinic effectiveness and clinic productivity. The incumbent is expected to review program analysis and provide appropriate assessments of the
outcomes and make recommendations as needed.

This announcement will be used to fill multiple Supervisor Social Worker vacancies at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, which includes:

Psychosocial Rehab and Recovery Program (PRRC): is a team that provides recovery-oriented services to veterans diagnosed with severe mental illness; this team provides individual and group psychotherapy, as well as community reintegration opportunities to assist veterans in identifying and working toward recovery goals.

Integrated Behavorial Health Clinic (IBHC): Co-located within the primary care clinic(s) and will be responsible for providing screening for depression, excessive substance use, PTSD, cognitive limitations and other psychological disorders for patients attending the clinic. The incumbent will also provide brief evidence based interventions for a variety of emotional and psychiatric problems including depression, anxiety, problem drinking and other addictive disorders; motivational interviewing to encourage patient's use of additional mental health services when needed; and psycho-educational interventions as needed. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring patients, providing education and support, influencing adherence to guidelines by providing "ontime, on-target" information to primary care physicians, and collaboratively making appropriate care decisions.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00 to 4:30; may include extended hours, weekends, and holidays

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.
  • English Language Proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Grade Determinations: GS-13 Supervisory Social Workers. Experience, Education and Licensure. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for subordinate staff to qualify for licensure. Your experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. You may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition to meeting all the above basic requirements, one (1) year of professional social work experience, equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12) under qualified social work supervision. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently.

Supervisory GS-13 Demonstrated Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.

2. Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.

3. Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers.

4. Ability to provide administrative supervision and clinical supervision, including supervision for social work licensure

Physical Requirements: Work involves diagnostic evaluation, planning an treatment to patients in assigned areas. Work demands are frequent standing and walking since patients and services are scattered throughout the VA Medical Center
