Job Description
Mason

Brickwork and associated tuck pointing; bricklaying as required to repair existing, cutting and splitting of bricks and blocks; includes, but not limited to, common and face brick, terra cotta, cement, glass and cinder block.
- Interior expansion joint replacement; creates or replaces expansion joints and edges using forms, edging tools, jointers, and straightedges.
- Construction of steel reinforced support pads for building equipment.
- Removal of shower/tub enclosures and converting to shower stalls; installs ceramic tilework throughout, including the floor, taking care to create proper slope in floor for drainage and ensuring it is watertight.
- General ceramic tile work for wet areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms, operating room scrub areas and labs.
- Creates window and doorway openings in concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls; installs window sills and door jambs, along with lintels used to support the weight of the wall above the openings.
- Prepares substrate surfaces, lays out, forms up, pours and finishes concrete sections in roadways and sidewalks, taking care to ensure height and slope matches the existing within one-fourth inch.
- Constructs and repairs retaining walls.
- Preps surfaces and installs vinyl coated floor tile, solid sheet vinyl flooring or other substrates.
- Installs new or replaces existing carpeting, using the proper tools and adhesives; coordinates with the Interior Designers for color and material selection.
- Repairs existing manholes and catch basins, adjusting for proper height and slope to drain.A high degree of skill is required in building exterior restoration on both historic buildings and newer, more conventional designs; bricklaying, tuck pointing, sealing, waterproofing, caulking and mortar mixing; needs to have the skill to perform decorative brickwork through placement of brick of different colors to duplicate or create various designs and patterns; a high degree of skill is also required to be able to cut and shape brick to piece in spot repairs, especially around windows, doors, steps, columns, or other unique building features.
- Skill in the use of tools common to the masonry trade such as bricklayer's rule, brick sets, straight and angle trowels, screeds to smooth corners, bull floats to draw up surfaces and provide a smooth finish; operates power hammers and trowels, core drills,scarifiers, jackhammers, and diamond saws to remove concrete, cut bricks, cement blocks, paving stones and other surfaces for repair of walking surfaces, exterior walls,installation of equipment, etc.; lays out work using chalk lines, plumb bobs, tapes,squares, and levels.
- Must be skilled in the installation of interior tile work for floors and walls, ensuring a water tight seal and an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- Knowledge of construction of forms for and pouring of cement floors, sidewalks, stairs, curbing, walls, and foundations. Includes knowledge of rebar types and sizes and methods for tying in reinforcing members to existing structures or substrates.
- Knowledge of carpeting and vinyl flooring replacement techniques.
- Knowledge of the properties and applications of many types of adhesives, concrete, mortars and grouts; must know the proper mix and application of each.
- Must be able to set up, work from, and remove scaffolding, stages, planks, ladders, jacks, spider staging and other work platforms of various heights.
- Must be able to read and follow blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
- Know how to accurately estimate time and material for jobs.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data

Work schedule: DAYS, Occasional overtime, weekends, nights, etc, for emergent repairs.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work is active, frequently requiring heavy physical effort. The incumbent must have the physical strength and stamina to cope with heavy lifting and strenuous work, such as mixing
mortars, setting concrete and gypsum blocks, or carrying 50 lb. bags of mason materials.
Standing, kneeling and stooping for long periods of time are routine.
