Job Description
Registered Nurse (Cardiac Catheterization Lab)

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab RN must possess knowledge and abilities to perform high quality interventional procedures in accordance with the policies and procedures defining preparation of radiological equipment, physiological monitoring, defibrillator, pacemaker, and related equipment and devices used in the lab. The incumbent must also have a thorough understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology with advanced knowledge of cardiac hemodynamic wave forms, sterile technique, scrub and circulator roles and be able to anticipate all aspects of cardiac catheterization procedures. The Cardiac Catheterization Lab RN assesses patient and prepares a plan of care for procedures involving sedation. Additionally, the incumbent must maintain current ACLS certification and be able to intervene in emergency situations, including activating hospital code policy and competence in monitoring patients undergoing sedation in the lab.

The Cardiac Catheterization RN provides care for the Veteran in the Electrophysiology or Cardiac Catheterization Suite. He/she provides direct patient care to the patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional, coronary, peripheral, and electrophysiology studies. He/she communicates with the physician on an ongoing basis about the patient's condition and medication for the procedure. He/she consistently assists with the maintenance of equipment and inventory. He/she assesses procedures rooms for equipment functioning and readiness prior to procedures. The Cardiac Catheterization RN obtains supplies for individual cases and assures all appropriate needs of the patient care team are met. He/she hemodynamically monitors, positions and assists patients during procedures. There will be 100% compliance of safety utilization of including two patient identifiers and "time ours". Cardiac Catheterization RN's are to be proficient in hemodynamic monitoring and electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation.

This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. Makes caring for the Veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards.

The Cardiac Catheterization RN may function as a charge nurse to assume responsibility for patient care and patient flow of the Cardiac Catheterization patient on an assigned tour of duty. He/she provides specific information to help the patient/family understand pre-, intra-, and post-procedure activities. He/she functions as a preceptor assuming accountability and responsibility of the assigned orienteer's clinical development.

The incumbent requires the following competencies: A) excellent interpersonal skills and abilities to work effectively in a team setting; B) independence, initiative and flexibility to function in an evolving role that crosses the continuum of care and service lines; C) excellent verbal, written and electronic communication skills; D) computer skills in VISTA and CPRS, word processing; and E) annual competencies as determined at the unit level.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm plus on-call nights/weekends

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Must meet physical standards of position as listed in this vacancy announcement
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English
Preferred Experience:
  • 3 years ICU/ED experience
  • ACLS/BLS certifications
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
