Job Description
Mathematical Statistician

The Mathematical Statistician serves in the Community care Contact Center, in the Forecasting and Scheduling division in Denver, CO. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Helps plan, research, and implement the full scope of investigative projects requiring application of statistical theory.
  • Adapts a variety of methods and develops new procedures to statistical projects.
  • Analyzes findings, evaluates statistical limitations of data, and specifies the range of
  • logically possible explanations.
  • Plans procedures for collecting and tabulating data, recommends new or improved methods, and presents findings and recommendations.
  • Forecasts trends based on historical statistical analyses.
  • Identifies aberrations in statistical trends or in statistical data.
  • Develops recommendations for corrective actions and methods to achieve efficient and effective operations.
  • Applies analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues and studies concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of activities or functions related to the Contact Center mission which includes trending for future needs.
  • Plans the assembly and presentation of findings from assigned studies in graphic, chart, and narrative form, applying appropriate statistical and analytical techniques.
  • Performs data collection, data processing and data analysis and dissemination.
  • Establishes general data collection specifications that translate into detailed, practical plans for data collection systems.
  • Establishes general processing specifications that translate into detailed, practical plans for data processing and interprets findings to draw substance and meaning from them.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT INSTRUCTIONS: You must first meet Basic Education Requirements for this position. EDUCATION: Having completed of a degree that included twenty-four (24) semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least twelve (12) semester hours were in mathematics and six (6) semester hours were in statistics? (Transcripts Required) Note: Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirements must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: having at least twenty-four (24) semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least twelve (12) hours in mathematics and six (6) hours in statistics, plus appropriate experience or additional education? NOTE: The experience offered in combination with educational courses to meet the requirements, should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-12: having at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of Mathematical Statistician, and that is typically in or related to the position? To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least next lower grade level in Federal service as a GS-11. Specialized Experience is having skill in applying various statistical processes and methods; understanding of mathematical methods, survey and sample design techniques, and complex applied sample and variance estimating; comprehension of various mathematical and statistical theories; Using complex statistical methods to research, plan, and implement projects that involve developing new or modifying existing sampling, surveying, and design methods; experience in developing statistical standards to evaluate data quality and develop aspects of survey findings; and utilizing various software packages (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, Minitab, SQL, Visual Basic, SSIS, SAS, etc.)
