Job Description
Utility Systems Repairer-Operator

These positions are located within the Facilities and Engineering Service of the VA Medical Centers in Baltimore, MD (3 vacancies), Loch Raven, MD (3 vacancies).
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Repairing and operating several hospital utility systems;
Starting, stopping, and regulating the utilities and system components for optimum efficiency;
Troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing utility systems;
Performing preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment and systems;
Addressing, troubleshooting, stabilizing, and/or resolving emergency situations;
Coordinating work with contracted vendors;
Resolving non-routine situations such as locksmith problems and medical equipment malfunctions;
Maintaining detailed logs/records of all activities;
Operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning, pneumatic tube, medical gas, steam distribution, water distribution, electrical distribution, vertical transportation, refrigeration, and communication systems;
Performing related duties as required.

Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, to include some nights, weekends and holidays.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Utility Systems Repairer Operator (USRO) will be required to bend, stoop, crawl, walk, climb, jump, and lift heavy objects for moderate time durations. Efforts will vary depending on the task to be performed. Incumbent will occasionally be subject to very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous working conditions. He/She will be required to mix and handle chemicals for chilled water treatment, work in varying degrees of temperature, and will be exposed to hazards such as electrical shock.
