Health Technician (Hearing)

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 8:00am to 4:30pm

Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician (Hearing), PD#00013A

***RELOCATION INCENTIVE/RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE IS NOT AUTHORIZED.***

The incumbent provides direct and indirect patient care which requires dealing with veteran patients and their families in a variety of ways and settings. While the incumbent is under the guidance of the professional clinical (audiology or speech pathology) staff, he/she is expected to manage independent contacts with patients, family members, significant others, medical staff, colleagues and vendors in order to expedite patient care. He/she will need to prioritize duties and responsibilities as dictated by the demands of the division to which they are assigned, and to communicate and interact with patients in a manner appropriate to their cognitive, emotional, and chronological needs.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to (minimum of 3 and no more than 5 major duties):

  • Support of Hearing Aid Evaluations/Patient Education.
  • Performs minor Hearing Aid and Assistive Listening Device (ALD) Repairs.
  • Manages supplies and the clinical environment.
  • Assists clinicians in processing and use of other medical equipment.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Minimum Requirement:

Specialized Experience (GS-06): One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

? Ability to be self-directed and able to set priorities and deadlines.

? Experience in dealing with and adjusting to the many needs of professional staff, patients and family members.

? Ability to evaluate the anatomy of the ear relative to need for referral for medical conditions and relative to modifying earnolds or hearing aids fro proper fit.

? Assisting with office duties such as scanning/faxing documents, completing release of information forms and other clinic/healthcare related documents.

Substitution of Education: Successfully completed six (6) months of progressively higher level graduate education, leading to such a degree, in a major field of study related to the work of the position such health technician and a related allied health care field with courses which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position OR have Superior Academic Achievement. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements: Working with patients in the clinic and on the wards requires regular sitting, bending and standing. Patient transport occasionally requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Work in front of a CRT of 1-2 hours per day is required. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental and psychosocial problems and needs.
