Job Description
Food Service Worker

This position works for the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, Nevada within the Nutrition and Food Service. Incumbent serves food to the Veterans and utilizes good interpersonal skills and courtesy in all contacts to emphasize the concern and commitment of Nutrition & Food Services to customer service. Incumbent person performs simple food preparation and prepares special request items which are not on the menu. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Place food items on patient trays as they proceed down the tray assembly line according to a regular or modified menu, individual diet cards, or patient selections.
  • Identify obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu.
  • Decide what food items to serve for the most common diets when the diet card identifies only the kind of diet called for, such as a liquid diet or diabetic diet.
  • Set up their assigned station on the tray line with the correct supplies and food items, and break down and clean the station after the serving period.
  • Provide assistance to cooks in the food preparation area by weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes.
  • Prepare uncooked food items such as sandwich spreads and salad dressings.

Work schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week, varying shifts, including weekends and holidays

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Technical Practices
  • Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Without more than normal supervision
  • Work Practices


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stopping, reaching, pushing and bending. May also be required to work for long periods suing repetitive motion. They frequently lift or move objects and push/pull carts weighing up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 45 pounds, pushes and pulls heavy loaded tray carts. May also require pushing heavy carts and trucks during unloading, storing, and delivering food and supplies and will regularly lift or move objects over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers and a heavy duty dolly. To minimize risk of work-related injury, the food service worker adheres to safe, ergonomic work practices, including bending at knees to lift, pushing (not pulling) carts or other equipment, use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, and follow all established safety standards.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but is usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. The worker is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. The employee is required to wear protective shoes and gloves or other items required by food handling guides.Work is performed in the kitchen, dish room, pot/pan room, storage areas, and offices; where the steam and heat from cooking, serving on the tray assembly line and dish/pan washing often causes high temperatures and high humidity. Incumbent is subject to cuts and burns when preparing or serving food and beverages and is in danger of falling on slippery floors. Incumbent will be regularly exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and dishwashing equipment, and extreme temperatures when entering walk-in refrigeration and freezer units. Works with a variety of cleaning compounds and detergents, where protective gear such as masks, gowns, gloves, and goggles may be required. The work areas are generally well lit but usually noise from food service activities.
