Job Description
Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist

This position is located within the Director's Office/Shareholders section at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona, PA. Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:

  • Participates in emergency operations and serves as the public information officer for Hospital Incident Command, which requires availability 24 hours a day.
  • Works with other public affairs programs to communicate agency information in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Interviews subjects related to agency services in order to garner appropriate information for planning and decision making and/or promotional opportunities.
  • Takes an active role in all customer service programs, including training, feedback systems and performance improvement.
  • Works collaboratively with medical center leadership to create positive interactions between medical center and all of its stakeholders, to include employees, volunteers, patients, etc.
  • Educates customers and stakeholders on healthcare eligibility and enrollment to encourage maximum enrollment for medical center services.
  • Provides medical center leadership with strategic and factual information regarding the public's perceptions about the agency and offers recommendations to enhance perception.
  • Conveys accurate and timely information to various internal and external audiences relative to agency accomplishments and activities.
  • Creates and fosters relationships between medical center and external stakeholders such as media and others.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 8am to 4:30pm

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: MUST possess one (1) year of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Working experience utilizing concepts, principles and practices in media, public affairs, advertising, marketing, communications, crisis communication, media relations, special events/high-level visits, public relations, congressional relations, and new and emerging media such as new social media technologies and platforms; Providing input, advice and counsel for total Medical Center planning, programming, budgeting and general administration; Developing and managing budgets, writing statements of work and directing, coordinating and supervising activities of subordinates. (This experience must be documented in your resume.)

The work also required to regularly pick up loads of 15 pounds such as boxes of newspapers and other literature and to push carts of supplies. Flexibility in scheduling is required to accommodate displays, distribution of materials, occasional events, and media activities that may occur during other than regular duty hours.
