Job Description
MEDICAL SUPPLY TECHNICIAN
Duty Location: VA Caribbean Healthcare System - San Juan, PR

The position is assigned to the Sterile Processing Service (SPS). SPS is aligned under the Associate Director, Patient Care Services (ADPCS) and Is the central point from which Veteran care related surgical supply Inventories and reusable medical equipment (RME) are received, processed, decontaminated, packaged, and sterilized for distribution throughout the Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
  • Receives, disassembles, and inspects for damage reusable medical supplies, Instruments, and equipment
  • Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other gross contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and use of ultrasonic equipment. Loads and operates pre-sterilizers.
  • Assembles and loads ward, clinic and operating room carts according to schedules, and fills special and emergency request for supplies.
  • Determines appropriate method for cleaning and sterilizing the equipment, operates sterilizers, and stores and Issues the equipment
  • Advises medical personnel on the proper use of the equipment and on problems that arise in connection with its use.
  • Periodically inventories medical supplies and equipment, keeping record determining reordering needs. Removes outdated material from shelves for re?, sterilization.
  • Provides training and orientation to medical personnel on sterile supply techniques and procedures.
  • Determines appropriate method for cleaning and sterilizing the equipment, operates sterilizers, and stores and Issues the equipment
  • Advises medical personnel on the proper use of the equipment and on problems that arise in connection with its use.
  • You will perform all duties as assigned.
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Work Schedule: Full-time Employment: Other: Rotating shifts through various tours of duty to include all weekends and holidays; also provides rotating coverage for evening shift (11:00pm to 7:00am).

For GS-6: Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience to perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level of GS-5 in Federal service. Specialized experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. OR
Possess at least nine (9) semester hours of graduate level of education directly to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: A transcript or detailed course listing must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. See "How to Apply" for a description of a detailed course listing. Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level of education as described (above) combined to meet the total experience requirements for the GS-6 grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) AND

There is a frequent requirement for lifting baskets of stainless steel Instruments weighing 25 pounds from floor level to chest level and occasional requirements for similarly lifting baskets weighing 50 pounds. Qualifications & Requirements
