Job Description
Health System Specialist, GS-671-9, (GHATP Recent Graduates)

The GHATP program is a 12-month experience under the preceptorship of the Medical Center Director. The selectee's will start summer of 2018.

During the experience, the recent graduate will have an opportunity to rotate through various departments and the outpatient clinics served by the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC). The incumbent serves in a developmental capacity, performing duties/functions related to aspects of the Fellow position. He/She is required to satisfactorily complete both on-the-job training and related instructions from the immediate supervisor and to comply with all the requirements of the Graduate Healthcare Administration Training Program Recent Graduate. The preceptor provides guidance in assignments by outlining or discussing possible problem areas and defining objectives, plans, priorities and deadlines. The employee works independently to plan and carry out more commonly encountered work problems and deviations and brings controversial information or findings to the supervisor's attention for direction.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30 pm.

Recent Graduate Program: To be eligible, you must have obtained a qualifying masters degree within the previous 2 years (May 2016- May 2018). Veterans (as defined in 5 USC 2108) who, due to military service obligation, were precluded from applying to the Recent Graduates Program during any portion of the 2-year eligibility period described above have a full 2-year period of eligibility upon their release or discharge from active duty; however, this eligibility period cannot be extended beyond 6 years from the date of completion of the requirements of an academic course of study.

Graduate Education: Qualifying master's degree is a degree in a major field of study in hospital administration with course work in hospital administration, public health administration, or related fields such as business or public administration with a minimum of two courses in health care administration that is recognized by one of the accrediting agencies or associations recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. Preferred candidates will possess a degree from a program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME); the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB); the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:This position is mostly sedentary and requires sitting at a desk and using a computer for many hours each day. There may be light lifting and carrying of office supplies and equipment. Duties may include walking to various offices on different floors of the medical center. Traveling off-station to the community based outpatient clinics and other facilities within the VISN is required. Normal risks and discomforts of travel apply.
