Job Description
Mental Health Lead (Nurse IV)

The VISN Mental Health Lead (MHL) is a network level position that coordinates and plans for Mental Health care throughout the VISN. The incumbent directs a large, complex Mental Health program at the VISN level. This individual is selected by and reports to the VISN Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Duties are exercised with wide latitude, autonomy, and independence. Responsibilities include overall planning, direction, and execution of Mental Health care especially related to the implementation of the Uniform Mental Health Benefits Package. The administrative or technical work is of substantial difficulty and responsibilities are significant. This individual determines long range plans and works to assure that implementation of program goals are carried out. Consultation is provided to the Chiefs of Mental Health at the VISN 22 Medical Centers, other VISN programs, and serves as the VISN representative to Office of Mental Health Operations in VA Central Office.

We are a 24/7 medical center, incumbents may be expected towork nights, weekends, holidays, and off-tour to meet our Veteran's needs.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

(1) Masters degree in Nursing or related field with a BSNapproved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) OR

(2)Doctorate degree in nursingor related fieldOR

(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

  • Applicants must have 4-5 years ofexperience ifthey hold a maximum of a maters degree in nursing or related field
  • Applicants musthave 3-4 years of experience if they hold a maximum of a doctorate degree in nursing related field.

The following requirements are preferred for this position:

  • At a minimum, applicants should possess 5 years of experience in Mental Health Leadership in a clinical setting whichincludes inpatient and outpatient care settings and at least 5 years of experiencein a supervisory capacity.
  • At a minimum, applicants with a Masters degree in nursingor related field should have3 years of experience in nursing.
  • At a minimum, applicants with a Doctorate degree in nursing or related field should have 4 years of experience in nursing.

Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment - Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).
