Job Description
Teaching Fellow

KIPP Chicago Schools is a local network of 6 charter schools that is part of the nationally renowned Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP).  Our schools are completely free, and there are no requirements for enrollment except residency in the city of Chicago.  Students and families choose to enroll in our schools because they perceive them as the highest quality option in their neighborhoods.  Currently we serve 2,000 students in grades K - 8 across 6 campuses, and we will grow to serve 4,000 students across 10 campuses by 2020.  Our mission is to empower those students with character and academic skills necessary to succeed in top-quality high schools and universities, to be happy in the competitive world, and to have a positive impact on their communities.  99% of our students are African American or Latino; 96% qualify for free and reduced price lunch; and, 16% are identified as diverse learners.  In Chicago our campuses are located on the south and west sides of the city in communities broadly categorized as “low income.”  KIPP Chicago alumni from these communities graduate high school at a rate of 90%, matriculate to college at a rate of 87%, and earn a four-year degree at a rate of 44%, compared to national averages of 72%, 45%, and 8%, for “low income” students.  In addition to rigorous instruction in our K - 8 classrooms, our students receive continued support in high school and college through our KIPP Through College program and counselors.

The structural obstacles to teacher preparation and licensure are many and disproportionately prevent low-income people of color from becoming teachers.  As part of our commitment to serving low-income students and families of color, KIPP Chicago seeks to draw more talented, committed people into the teaching profession through our Teaching Fellows role.  This is a role for those at the very initial stages of their careers in education.  The role is ideal for those who have studied in another field and are looking to make a transition into teaching, those who are in an alternative licensure program like Teach for America, or those who have recently graduated from a teacher preparation program and are looking for their first classroom position.  Teaching Fellows:

  • Are placed in a single 5th or 6th grade classroom with an experienced mentor teacher who provides daily feedback and coaching.  The relationship between the “lead” teacher and the Fellow is fully collaborative -- both share responsibilities for delivering whole-group and small-group instruction, lesson planning, and communication with families.

  • Are full members of the KIPP Chicago team and family, participating in all development and staff experiences and receiving the professional and cultural benefits of working alongside our successful team

  • Receive full salary and benefits

  • Are enrolled in a Master of Arts in Teaching program at Relay Graduate School of Education that culminates in a degree and possibly Illinois teacher licensure.  Through KIPP Chicago’s partnership with Relay, the cost of the degree is significantly reduced.

  • Remain Fellows for one or two years, depending on performance, before being promoted to the position of Classroom Teacher.

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Passage of all Illinois licensure tests prior to May 1, 2018 (TAP 400 and one content-specific test)

  • Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher (3.0 or higher if pursuing licensure)

  • Undergraduate major in a pure English, Math, Science, or Social Science field (only required if pursuing licensure)

  • Outstanding prior achievements, academic or professional

  • Passion for creating social, political, and economic equity by increasing the number of students of color who graduate from college

KIPP Chicago Schools offers a competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • Salaries based on experience

  • Competitive rates for medical insurance and short-term disability insurance.  Dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance are offered at no cost.

  • Contributions to the Chicago Teacher’s Pension Fund in accordance with Illinois state law (for those with Illinois teacher licenses)

  • An additional, optional 403(b) retirement account

  • Robust professional development

Please apply immediately, as applications are accepted and roles are filled on a rolling basis.  All interested applicants should visit, and click the “Teaching Fellows” job posting located under “Instructional Positions.”  If you have any questions, please contact the Director of Recruitment via email at

KIPP Chicago is committed to a policy of equal treatment for all individuals applying for employment. KIPP Chicago does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic background.
