Campus Business Manager

DUTY SCHEDULE:                             12 Months
The Campus Business Manager (CBM) is part of the Regional Services Team (RST) and is responsible for ensuring the overall team mission is accomplished which is to help remove the obstacles to teaching and learning, deliver great support and partnership to schools, RST faculty, parents, and students, and strike the right balance of structure and processes, respecting school/dept. input.  The scope of duties includes, but is not limited to, managing the campus facilities, working to ensure efficient food service operations, partnering with the Director of Transportation to help get our KIPPsters to and from school safely and on time, coordinating the campus safety and security programs, and managing a campus budget. 
The CBM is the non-academic leader for the campus who works closely with school faculty.  This position manages a Plant Manager, custodial staff, and Campus Receptionist.  With the campus team, he/she also manages important partners and vendors including the security guard service, food service provider, and building and grounds vendors.
The successful CBM is highly organized, works with a sense of urgency, has excellent customer service skills, can manage people, and is moved by the mission of KIPP.      
The Campus Business Manager will:

  1. Lead and Coordinate non-instructional initiatives at a campus to deliver great support and partnership
    1. Research and implement best practices for all non-instructional activities
  2. Administer and audit the campus operations budget and payroll process
    1. Manage campus-level operations and financial activities for multiple schools
  3. Manage, train, and evaluate non-instructional campus personnel
    1. Prepare work schedules and adjust job duties when needed
    2. Provide cross-training, substitute staffing, and contingency plans to ensure continuity of non-instructional services
  4. Oversee and coordinate school operations, including maintenance, grounds, security, custodial services, technology, school safety, and fixed assets for a group of schools to help remove obstacles to teaching and learning
    1. Serve as the liaison for maintenance, repairs, and construction projects
  5. Evaluate and coordinate the development and implementation of school improvement plans, while striking a balance of structure with input
    1. Ensure that appropriate resources are made available to support the plans
  6. Advise, recommend, and implement solutions to various business related requests, questions, and concerns using data, information and analysis in decision making
  7. Research and implement region and campus based policies and procedures to make decisions collaboratively with the Director of Campus Operations, School Leaders, and Heads of Schools.
  8. Perform other job-related duties, as assigned by the supervisor.

Education and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • 3-5 years of related work experience required. 
  • School or non-profit operations or business management experience a plus.
  • Experience managing people required.
  • Experience managing budgets required.
  • Strong computer skills required.
  • Excellent customer service skills required.
  • Requires successful completion of specialized business management training delivered and assessed by KIPP Houston Public Schools.

Position Detail Summary:

  • Leadership Responsibilities
    • Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of employees. Leading and directing typically involves monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of the same duties they are leading.
  • Work Complexity/Independent Judgment
    • Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the region. Interactions are typically with school or department faculty, peers, and the KIPP Houston leadership team. 
  • Customer Relations
    • Regularly visible, assesses and diffuses complex, and escalated customer issues. Takes personal responsibility and accountability for solving systemic customer service problems. Regularly explores alternative and creative solutions to meeting the needs of the customer within KIPP Houston’s policies and guidelines.

Working/Environmental Conditions:
Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions.  Work can require around-the-clock availability to respond to campus emergencies.  Ability to carry and/or lift between 15-44 lbs.
