Job Description
Peer Support Apprentice

The incumbent will serve in a time limited appointment in an entry level capacity to attain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to prepare the individual for certification as a Peer Specialist and the qualifications for a non-time limited appointment as a Peer Support Specialist.

The incumbent will be required to sign a statement regarding the requirement to obtain certification.

The Incumbent functions as an apprentice interdisciplinary team member, assisting physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Peer Support Apprentices perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veteran patients in articulating their goals for recovery, learning, and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the Apprentice's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. The incumbent functions as a role model, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; services as a consumer advocate, provides consumer information and peer support for veterans in outpatient and inpatient settings. This individual must have the ability to assist others in treatment based on achievable goals, the incumbent can assist others who are diagnosed with mental illness or co-occurring disorders to achieve their personal recovery goals by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, and the empowerment inherent in self-directed recovery. The incumbent performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from young adult to old age, in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process.

Promotion Potential: The entry level Peer Support Apprentice position itself does not provide any known promotion potential, but does allow uncertified, but otherwise qualified Veterans to receive training for becoming certified, thus fully qualified for future non-time limited Peer Specialist opportunities. Selection or promotion to a Peer Specialist position is not guaranteed.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays may be required depending upon the needs of the service.

RESTRICTED TO ELIGIBLE VETERANS IN MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a Veteran of the United Stated Armed Forces.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Statutory Requirements: Section 405 of Public Law 110-387, as codified in 38 USC 7402(b)(13), established that to be eligible to receive appointment as a Peer Support Apprentice position, a person must:

(1) Be a Veteran* who has recovered or is recovering from a mental health condition;

AND

(2) Length of Experience as a Consumer of Mental Health Recovery Services. Veterans eligible under 38 USC 7402(b)(13) must have spent a minimum of 1 year in personal recovery from a mental health condition. (Please do not submit medical documentation with your application.)

Specialized Experience:
PEER SUPPORT APPRENTICES GS-5:
Peer Support Apprentices must actively pursue becoming certified as required to serve as a Peer Specialist. At the time of appointment, the supervisor will provide the Peer Support Apprentice with the written requirements for becoming certified, the date by which he or she must become certified, and the consequences for not becoming certified by the deadline. NOTE: Failure to be become certified by the prescribed date will result in removal from this GS-102 occupation and may result in termination of employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time-In Grade: There is no Tim-In-Grade requirements for the GS-05.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Typically, the employee will sit to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items (such as books, papers), accessing transportation, and/or driving a government vehicle.
