Job Description
Food Service Worker

The VA San Diego Healthcare System, Department of Nutrition & Food Service is seeking Food Service Workers. The Food Service Worker, WG-3 performs tasks with several steps or a sequence of tasks that requires attention to work operations. Follows set procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follows an established sequence of work.


Duties Include but may not be limited to the following:
* Prepares and portions standard serving sizes of food using the proper utensils and containers.
* Assembles and prepares a variety of fruits and vegetable salads, sandwiches and pack box lunches.
* Sets up tray lines, steam-tables, dining room tables and side service stands with hot and cold food items and beverages.
* Delivers and retrieves food trays to and from patient rooms.
* Sets up, operates, and cleans a mechanical dishwasher.
* Scrapes, soaks, scours and scrubs, sorts, and stacks the heavier cooking utensils
* Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas and kitchen equipment.
* Unloads food from delivery trucks, moves heavy garbage cans when collecting and transferring trash from the work area.


Work Schedule: Part-Time, May work AM shift 6:45am - 9:45amOR PM shift 4:30pm - 7:30pm(possibly depending on the needs of the service).

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidencewhich demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is "Ability to do the work of aFood Service Workerwithout more than normal supervision." Example of such duties include but are not limited to food preparation following established recipes, applying food safety and sanitation practices in the preparation and storage of food items.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

* Work practices - including keeping things neat, clean, and in order.
* Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
* Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)
* Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
* Knowledge of materials.
* Dexterity and Safety.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Work requires continual standing (7 hours), and walking (5 hours); frequent stooping (1 hour intermittently), reaching above shoulder, pushing (2 hours intermittently), straight pulling (1 hour intermittently), repeated bending (4 hours intermittently), and kneeling (1 hour intermittently). Work requires use of fingers, both hands and legs, having depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors, and hearing (aid permitted). Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 15-44 pounds (moderate carrying) unassisted and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 45 pounds (heavy lifting and carrying 45 pounds and over) with assistance of lifting devices or other workers and use of cutting tools.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in kitchen areas that are well lighted but are often hot and noisy. The incumbent is exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled. Subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves and hot grease and water.
