Job Description
Histotechnologist

This is a Histotechnologist position within the Histology Section of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at .the Decatur Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Histotechnologists use skills and sophisticated techniques to prepare tissue for microscopic examination to establish and confirm patient diagnoses. The five basic steps include grossing and fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining. Tasks require attention to details, mechanical ability and knowledge of biology, immunology, molecular biology, anatomy and chemistry. Accurate performance of duties under unusual or emergent situations (e.g., frozen section) is essential.

The employee works with various compositions of chemical stains and dyes for the purpose of disease dictation and diagnosis. He/she is skillful in the application of histological and pathological laboratory techniques. Sets up and monitors record-keeping systems and effective quality control data and procedures; defines reference values with known positive/negative controls. Stains tissue sections using a combination of routine and special stains; knows which stain to employ to demonstrate particular tissue elements and properties and is able to interpret positive controls used for these procedures. Correlates immunohistochcmistry staining with H&E and special staining; develops procedures and establishes parameters for immunohistochemistry test results.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Possess at least a bachelor's degree with major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) -AND-

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE

One (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level of (GS-7) in Federal Government. Specialized experience is possessing knowledge and experience of histotechnology that is required to carry out the preparation and processing of tissue and body fluids, as well as the embedding, cutting, preparation, staining and cover slipping of slides for their ultimate microscopic diagnosis by the pathologist; working knowledge of mathematics sufficient to calculate laboratory data/results and interpret the validity of results obtained as well as calibrating or standardizing instruments where necessary. -OR-
2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) -OR-

A combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience as (described above) to meet the total qualification requirements for this position and perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. (UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) -AND-

In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

Lifting heavy containers of reagents or microtomes is occasionally necessary.
