Job Description
Medical Technician

This position is located within Laboratory Service at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, UT. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs blood collection procedures by venipuncture using different methods;
  • Establishes proper identity of all patients;
  • Ensures accountability of specimens by proper and complete labeling;
  • Performs Point of Care testing for Prothrombin time;
  • Trains students, nurses, and volunteers on specimen collection;
  • Performs specialized collection and testing for intact Parathyroid Hormone, Rapid Strep, Influenza and chain of custody drug screens;
  • Performs proper packaging and ships specimens with computerized manifest;
  • Receives samples and specimens of tissue, blood, urine, stool, sputum, and other body fluids.;
  • Communicates and treats customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

Work Schedule: Full Time, Various Shifts, Weekends, Various Hours, 24/7 Coverage

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position. Additional specialized experience: Performing blood collection procedures by venipuncture using different methods; performing proper packaging and shipping specimens with computerized manifest; establishing proper identity of all patients; receiving samples and specimens of tissue, blood, urine, stool, sputum, and other body fluids.
OR
Possess successful completion of a four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Transcript Required)
OR
Possess equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described above to meet the total experience requirements for the Medical Technician position. Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. (Transcript Required)

The work involves moderate risks and discomfort associated with working in a clinical laboratory and drawing blood specimens from patients on wards with regular and recurrent exposure to hazards such as infectious materials, needle punctures, electrical appliances, and physical abuse by patients.
