Job Description
Medical Technician
NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

This position, located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Western New York Healthcare System, Buffalo, New York performing technical work in one or more areas such as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, and serology. The majority of the work is in support of patient diagnosis and/or treatment and requires a practical knowledge of the techniques of medical laboratory practices. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Accepts and documents incoming patient specimens;
  • Processes specimens and selects appropriate procedures based on type of specimens, patient information, and resources available in the laboratory;
  • Controls physical conditions and responds to time factors to insure that the physiological state of the specimen and the quality of patient care is maintained;
  • Performs a variety of laboratory tests;
  • Evaluates the validity of date in relation to the test systems and assay procedures;
  • Monitors quality control of testing systems;
  • Maintains the laboratory facilities, equipment and controls supplies;
  • Monitors specimens, equipment and the environment for contamination;
  • Calibrates, controls, and maintains a variety of instrumentation and laboratory equipment against standards;
  • Prepares diagnostic reagents and reference materials;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 4:30pm - 8:30pm

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Specialized Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a medical laboratory technician. Experience should include collecting, categorizing, cataloging, storing, and maintaining specimen integrity; and calibrating, standardizing, and maintaining equipment and instruments. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~

Education:
Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) from an accredited institution with course work directly related to the work of this position (i.e. chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc.) may be substituted for the experience required. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and transcripts are required. ~OR~

Combination: Combination of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond 9 semester hours) and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (as described above) and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Your experience must be detailed in your resume and transcripts are required.

In many situations, the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. There may be special requirements for agility or dexterity, such as exceptional hand/eye coordination, or good color vision. The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts associated with working in a clinical laboratory which requires special safety techniques and universal precautions, e.g. working around moving parts, carts or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. In this position you are required to use protective clothing or gear such as hard hats, masks, gowns, earplugs, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields to moderate risks or to follow procedures for minimizing risk.
