Job Description
Dental Assistant

Dental assistants at this level serve in staff dental assistant positions, independently performing more complex work in assigned specialties while receiving general administrative supervision. The Dental Assistant assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently ofdirect supervision. As the Dental Assistant your duties may include; but are not limited to:

  • Shows courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude to patients, co-workers and the public.
  • Provides assistance to customers with questions or concerns, provides service recovery.
  • Sets up operatory for planned dental procedure and cleans dental unit for timely turnover.
  • Passes instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently.
  • Keeps operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissues effectively and comfortably.
  • Prepares dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer's instructions.
  • Accomplishes all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols.
  • Assists n routine general dental procedures.
  • Assists in specialized dental procedures, such as oral maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, surgical periodontics and implant restorations.
  • Images are characterized by diagnostic quality, accurately oriented and exposed.
  • Dental imaging safety techniques are utilized, and retakes are minimized.
  • Imaging requests are accomplished within the desired time frame.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning up operatories.
  • Instruments are properly prepared for sterilization by SPD standards.
  • Instruments are prepared in a manner that does not delay clinical care.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in exposing images.
  • Assists patients in scheduling appointments.
  • Assists in filling gaps in the doctor's schedule due to late cancellations and failed appointments.
  • Assists dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in patients records.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA with written and verbal information.
  • Participates in patient identification an time out per JCAHO requirements.
  • Complies with Employee Education requirements.
  • Makes final denture impression trays and prepares bite rims.
  • Remove sutures and removal of periodontal surgical dressing.
  • Impressions for diagnostic casts and preliminary impressions for prosthetic fabrication.
  • Provides post-operative and other appropriate patient education.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. You must be proficient in the written and verbal English Language.
  • Experience. You must have at leastsix month's experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. OR; Successfully completed a 1 year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) OR; A combination of experience and education.
  • Dental Certification. Successfully completed the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board. Inc.; OR Successfully completed the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry.

Preferred Experience:

  • RDA license
  • 1 year work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work as a Dental Assistant
  • Experience in all phases of prosthodontics including implant restoration
  • Basic Life Support certification (BLS), certification is required for all VA clinical personnel, including dental assistants, but it is listed under "preferred experience". Basic Life Support is also required by the California Dental Board for all licensed and unlicensed dental assistants.
  • Current certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: GS-6 Dental Assistant

Applicants must have 1 year equivalent to the next lower grade level which has equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of the Dental Assisting. In addition to my experience include the ability to identity normal oral anatomy, advanced knowledge of instruments, materials and standardized dental procedures used in all phases of restorative, surgical, endodontic and periodontal care and procedures.
