Job Description
Laborer

These positions are located in the Maintenance Repair Section of Facilities Management at the Eastern Colorado Healthcare System, Denver, Colorado. As a Laborer, you will perform laboring duties and custodial duties in the safest possible manner to avoid hazardous situations that may result in personal injury or property damage. You will perform laboring duties that require training and experience. You will lift and move equipment and components, load and unload heavy boxes, bulky supplies and materials to and from trucks, dollies, etc. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Services custodial equipment such as waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, power scrubbing machines, and wall washing machines;
  • Disassembles, makes minor repairs, cleans, oils and greases equipment and replaces worn gears, gaskets, belts, brushes and roller bearings;
  • Transports trash carts and operates trash compactor following operational guidelines;
  • Operates weight-handling equipment such as pallet jacks, dollies and hand trucks;
  • Performs housekeeping tasks (e.g. trash collection/handling, dust mopping, damp mopping, vacuuming, wall washing, restroom cleaning, etc.);
  • Utilizes proper sanitation techniques using cleaning agents and proper equipment, supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
  • Performs minor preventive maintenance on equipment such as replacing belts, bolts, screws, etc.;
  • Handles recycling duties to include cardboard bailing operations and paper goods collection; and
  • Maintains stock room for the department.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (Screen-out).
  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order)
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Dexterity and safety.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be physically able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, climbing, ladders, stooping, bending and crawling. Incumbent must be able to work in congested areas in tight, cramped or awkward positions. Incumbent may be required to carry and set up ladders and indoor scaffolding/staging. Incumbent may be required to lift or move heavy equipment or furniture that may weight more than 50 pounds. Incumbent may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and be fit tested for proper PPE and respirator.

Working Conditions: Incumbent works in Medical Center throughout the facility. Since much of the work is done in patient care areas, the incumbent must be ever alert to the safety and well-being of patients, visitors, staff and fellow employees. Duties may also involve working in tight, cramped, wet, dry and dusty areas. Incumbent may be exposed to skin irritations from strong chemical solutions. Incumbent may be subject to minor cuts, scrapes and bruises. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Incumbent works outside in all types of weather. Inside, areas may be dusty, drafty and noisy. Tools, equipment and tasks involved frequently require special care to avoid serious injuries.
