Job Description
Carpenter - Asbestos

This position will function as a Carpenter - Asbestos Abatement for Engineering Service for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) and is located within the Maintenance and Operations Section of Engineering Service. The primary purpose of the position is: modifying, maintaining, repairing, and painting buildings, structures, walls, partitions, panels, ceilings, cabinets, countertops, bookcases, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, sheetrock and composite building materials with the additional task of asbestos removal as needed. The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Erects construction barriers, remodels offices, and removes and/or erects new walls (wood, metal, concrete masonry, plaster, etc.) and structures that require specific tolerances and structural soundness like stairs, ramps, rafters, window frames, etc.
  • Installs drywall, door jambs, and door hardware to precise specifications.
  • Lowers and levels ceiling tiles and supporting metal grid.
  • Removes existing floor coverings and installs the specified new floor covering (carpet, ceramic tile, vinyl tile, vinyl planks, etc.) and cove base materials.
  • Determines type and quantity of materials required for various remodeling and construction projects.
  • Utilizes blue prints and written and verbal instructions to calculate the amount of material needed.
  • Sets up and dismantles scaffolding and ladders as needed to accomplish assigned work.
  • Installs various items such as bulletin boards, dispensers, and framed items using appropriate anchors and screws.
  • Fabricates and installs/hangs countertops, wall shelving, and cabinets safely to support anticipated load.
  • Utilizes various saws to make irregular cuts (i.e., radius, half moon, triangle, etc.).
  • Patches wall holes using joint compound.
  • Accomplishes preventive maintenance and inspection tasks.
  • Prepares and finishes a variety of surfaces to include walls, metallic door bumpers, door handles, parking lots, and street curbs.
  • Tapes, floats, and sands walls in order to prepare them for primer and latex finishes.
  • Paints surfaces using rollers and brushes.
  • Accomplishes all work in connection with the handling, control, removal, abatement, encapsulation and/or disposal of asbestos-containing building materials (ACM), mold remediation and lead-base paint removal.

Work Schedule: Compressed Work Week Schedule 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Four-10 hour days

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: You will work from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, motorized high-lift, etc., as well as other hard to reach places. You will stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. You will frequently lift and carry tools, parts, equipment, and material that weigh up to 20 pounds. You will occasionally lift or move heavy objects weighing more than 40 pounds. You are required to move, with assistance when necessary, furniture, furnishings and other objects to accomplish work.
Carpentry work is performed both indoors and outside. You will be exposed to hot and cold outside temperatures. Interior work is usually in buildings, adequately heated, lighted and ventilated. You will continuously handle objects weighing less than 50 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds. You will intermittently work in awkward and cramped positions, particularly while on ladders or in the interstitial space. Noise from hammers, saws and other power shop tools is frequent. There is dust, and sometimes dirt, when
repairing structures and operating power saws. Injuries may occur in lifting heavy pieces of lumber or equipment. There is a risk of cuts and bruises in using hand tools and equipment. You may also run the risk of losing an appendage when operating power tools and in falling from ladders and scaffolds.
In accomplishing painting, you must wear appropriate personal protective equipment. The equipment can become hot and uncomfortable and place added stress onto the worker. Painting is normally accomplished in a climate-controlled area but occasionally accomplished outside in heat or cold. You are subject to dirt, dust, spray, fumes, and odors from accomplishing job.
