Job Description
Physical Therapist

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Full-time, Permanent, Physical Therapist (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Supervisor). This position will be located in the Extended Care & Rehabilitation (EC&R)Service line. AsthePhysical Therapist (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Supervisor), you are responsible for the following duties to include, but not limited to:

  • Supervise, direct and manage a diverse physical medicine and rehabilitation staff (includes Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapists, Recreation Therapists, Speech Pathologists and corresponding assistants).
  • Assigning and evaluation of work of subordinate staff, as well as resolving problems which may interfere with the delivery of therapy by staff members.
  • Developing and initiating new treatment programs which apply current research findings.
  • Participating as an instructor in facility's in service clinical training.
  • Consulting with staff physicians through patient presentations, attendance at ward rounds, clinics and conferences.
  • Interviewing candidates for positions in the section, recommending appointments, advancements or when appropriate disciplinary actions, evaluation performance, identifying continuing education and training needs.
  • Analyzing clinically appropriate data effectively to optimize quality, performance and productivity within the section.
  • Represent EC&R Service Line in such a way as to maintain respect, sustain motivation and morale, avoid friction, reconcile divergent view points and achieve cooperation among stakeholders and employees. Safeguards against the unauthorized release of this information.
  • Monitors and facilitates employee development and competency.
  • Responsible for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointments, awards, advancement, resolving grievances and when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
  • Manages administering leave, budgeting, resource procurement, and resolves concerns and complaints.
  • Incumbent monitors equipment effectiveness & evaluates new equipment to ensure purchase of appropriate equipment & delivery of state-of-the-art treatment.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings of administrative and educational nature, meetings are scheduled to meet the goals of the institution and needs of the staff.
  • Direct supervision consists of assisting in examination of more difficult cases, advising therapist/assistant, explaining unusual aspects of treatment and acting as consultant regarding changes in treatment plans.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is typically Mondaythrough Friday, Administrative hours. Additional information will be discussed during the interview process.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Education: Graduate from a degree program in physical therapy from an approved college or university approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The CAPTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit entry-level physical therapy programs.
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations:

GS-13:

Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion ofone year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12). Generally, assignments at this grade level require the knowledge, skills, and competencies normally acquired through post-graduate residency or fellowship training programs. In addition to fully meeting KSAOs identified at the GS-13 full performance level, the candidate must also demonstrate the KSAOs required for the specific assignment.

Demonstrated GS-13 KSAOs:

1. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to provide clinical guidance to Staff PTs within the department.

2. Knowledge of human resources administration, including such functions as the ability to interview and select qualified applicants, monitor and evaluate performance, and maintain effective labor management relations within scope of responsibility.

3. Ability to effectively supervise, direct, and manage a diverse physical therapy staff.

4. Skill in interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution.

5. Ability to analyze clinically appropriate data effectively to optimize quality, performance, and productivity within the section.

6. Ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, and solve problems in order to meet multiple deadlines and identify/address organizational problems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: Ability to walk or to get to all clinics daily requires standing, bending and sitting, as well as carrying light objects.Due to the complexity of the work, the multiplicity of the projects at any one time, deadlines, and duties, the job requires a high level of energy, and may be psychologically stressful at times. Given the probability of patient treatment, the work requires above-average agility and dexterity.
