Job Description
Physician Assistant - Cancer Center
The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC), Section of Hematology/Oncology is currently seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Physician Assistant. As a medical professional, you will be responsible for reporting patient care activities in the medical record. As a physician assistant, you will be authorized to enter clinical orders in the medical records of patients admitted to the Medicine Care Line for care. Responsible for entering orders, progress notes, consultation requests, discharge summaries, reports of histories, and physical examinations in the patient's medical record. You will assist in the assessment and care of hematology/Oncology patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

The MEDVAMC is the most complex level 1A facility within the VA system and has one of the largest and busiest Hematology/Oncology sections in the VA. MEDVAMC serves as the acute tertiary care referral center for a large veteran population in East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi. Hematology/Oncology section provides multidisciplinary care for local and referred complex patients.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m(Other flex tours are available)

Basic Requirements:

*U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

*Education. The candidate must meet the following:

(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and

(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

*Certification

(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.

(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying

Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.

(3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 25 pounds and over; Moderate carrying, 25 pounds and over; Pushing (1 hours); Both hands required; Walking (4 hours); Standing (4 hours); Kneeling (1 hours); Repeated bending (2 hours); Both legs required; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Hearing (aid permitted); Mental and emotional stability.
