Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST

FULL-TIMEPOSITION

The Minneapolis VA Anesthesia Service provides veteran patients with anesthesia procedures for both ambulatory and inpatient surgical procedures. The services include: rendering patients unconscious for surgical procedures (general anesthesia), major neuroaxial blocks for surgical procedures (spinal and epidural anesthesia), nerve block for surgical procedures, monitored anesthesia care, procedures to alleviate post-operative pain and resuscitation services. Anesthesia services are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The department utilizes anesthesiologists (physicians who specialize in anesthesiology) and nurse anesthesia (nurses who specialize in anesthesia). We work in an anesthesia team to provide anesthesia and critical care services to the patients who are undergoing surgical procedures at the Minneapolis VAMC. At the Minneapolis VA, the physician anesthesiologist directs the anesthesia care team. Our philosophy is that the management of anesthesia is best accomplished using a team approach. It is the expectation that at the Minneapolis VAMC the anesthesia care team will operate to provide the safest possible patient care. Job responsibilities vary, depending if a Nurse II or a Nurse III. These responsibilities are stated in a functional statement that is available upon request

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Anesthesia program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
    • Nurse Anesthetist Certification must be current and is a condition of employment.
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

Nurse II - Master's degree in nurse anesthesia new graduate.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nurse anesthesiaand approximately 2-3 year's ofCRNA practice/experienceor Doctorate Degree in Nurse Anesthesia.

Preferred Experience: The VA hires new graduates. Some positions require nursing experience and this is detailed in the duty section of the announcement.

Experience refers to paidCRNA experience. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience.


Education/Experience Requirements: Years of experience and educational degree factor into the determination of pay.

Physical Requirements: In accordance with HRML No. 05-12-02, Employment of People with Disabilities, Including Under Schedule A, 5 CFR 213.3102 (u).

ForCRNAs in Direct Patient Care assignments, Requirements include:

Heavy Lifting (up to 35 lbs); Moderate Carrying (15-35 lbs); Reaching Above Shoulder; Ability and dexterity of hand(s) to manage gross and fine motor tasks of patient care (i.e. IV insertion, wound care management, etc.); Walking Throughout Assigned Shift; Standing As Duties Require; Kneeling as Duties Require; Repeated Bending As Duties Require; Near Vision Correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far Vision Correctable in One Eye To 20/50 and to 20/100 In the Other; Color Vision; Hearing (aid permitted); and Specific Hearing Requirements.

Conditions of Employment: (Failure to comply may be grounds for withdrawal of an offer of employment or dismissal after appointment).

  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
