Job Description
Nurse Practitioner, Primary Care

The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) is seeking a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. You will be required to go to the clinics to see patients throughout the week.The patient population and age group served are Primary Care Veteran patients receiving care through the VASNHS ages young adult through geriatric.

The APRN is a registered nurse with advanced education and experience that applies specialized clinical nursing knowledge and skills to patient care as well as in the improvement of the quality of care provided by others. An APRN independently provides theory and research-based care to clients facilitating attainment of health goals, works with nurses to advance nursing practice to improve outcomes cost-effectively, and/or provides clinical expertise to affect system-wide changes in organizations to improve programs of care. The APRN provides advanced levels of direct care as defined by the board and assists other nurses and health professionals in both establishing and meeting health goals for individuals and populations of patients. The APRN may function in a variety of roles, including patient advocate, consultant, educator, administrator, researcher, and/or direct patient care. The APRN collaborates with other disciplines to develop, implement, and coordinate a system of patient care delivery that improves quality of care, patient satisfaction, positive outcomes, appropriate utilization of resources and cost efficient services. The APRN may beassigned to paneled teams and/or to provide the necessary direct patient care needs including coverage for other providers.

The APRN, is a registered nurse with advanced education and experience who cares for a specific population of patients in a variety of settings. These settings include, however, are not limited to, primary care clinics, specialty clinics/programs, extended care programs, community-based outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and ambulatory surgery programs. The APRN provides a unique approach to healthcare that allows the incorporation of traditional nursing skills as well as advanced practice skills in the care of patients. These skills enable the APRN to anticipate and implement preventive health measures with a strong emphasis on patient/significant other/family education as well as illness management of primary care/specialty care.

The APRN is proficient and demonstrates competency and the ability to either set up or reprocess Reusable Medical Equipment as applicable for all equipment for which he/she has been trained. Familiarizes self with how their activities impact VA's goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

  • Amasters degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE.

  • Certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

Experience as a APRN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies
for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

* Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;

* Professional Development: performance, education/career development;

* Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;

Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

A Nurse Practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a registered nurse and a nurse practitioner in a State, and possess a masters degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

Preferred Experience:

One (1) to two (2) years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner with a demonstrated ability to provide high quality care.

Applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality. This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided that candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment - Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires visual acuity; keen hearing; clear, distinctive speech; and manual dexterity. This position requires walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. The APRN must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on employee, environmental, and program needs. Must be able to perform the following:

Moderate Lifting 20-45 lbs.

Walking, standing intermittently up to a period of one continuous hour. Total walk, and standing time for the 8 hour day, is up to 4 hours.

Intermittent sitting up to a period of one or more continuous hour(s). Total sitting time for the day up to 4 hours.

Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously

Ability to distinguish shades of colors

Typing intermittently up to one continuous hour

Bending and stooping required to assess patients or perform care

Reaching above shoulder required to obtain supplies or light objects

Fine motor movements of hands/fingers to document electronically

Hearing acuity to communicate on the telephone and auscultate with stethoscope

Corrected vision to 20/30

Ability to exert 20 lbs of pressure to compress an adult chest 2" for approximately 1-2 minutes (CPR)

Frequent hand washing and sanitizing required
