Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist - Surgery Service- John Cochran Division

The VA Saint Louis Health Care System is recruiting for a Certified Registered Nurse of Anesthesiology for Surgery Service, JohnCochran Division. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is a valuable member of the Surgical Service. The incumbent delivers comprehensive anesthesia care in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care areas for a diverse Veteran population. Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs the pre-anesthetic patient history and physical, including collection of pre-operative consults and data, to formulate anesthetic plan
  • Describes the anesthetic risks, benefits, and options to the patient
  • Administers inhalation, regional, intravenous, local and topical anesthetics
  • Continually evaluates the patient's physical status and response to anesthesia
  • Performs post-anesthetic management of patients
  • Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and medications
  • Assists in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols related to anesthesia
  • Responsible for maintaining the supply/inventory of medications used in anesthesia practice
  • Performs duties in the Operating Room, GI Lab, Pulmonary Lab, EP Lab, and Interventional Radiology

Work Schedule: Schedule could be Monday throughFriday ORTuesdaysthrough Saturday. Rotating tours are based on the needs of the department. Rotating on-call schedule as needed.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship
  • Proficient in both written and spoken English language
  • Certification: Certified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists
  • Registration: Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia.

Grade Requirements

Entry Level: (Nurse II) - None beyond basic requirements

Full Performance Level: (Nurse III) - In addition to meeting the requirements for Entry Level, the CRNA has had progressively responsible experience in the administration of anesthetics as indicated in the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. These individuals must demonstrate the ability to participate in a program for nurse anesthesia care and demonstrate knowledge of anesthetizing locations, methods, equipment and procedures. At this level, the CRNA has experience in the administration of anesthetics that has demonstrated the nurse anesthetist's ability to participate in team programs that are technically challenging and/or complicated. Typically candidates can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities of Full Performance Level within 2 years from entering the occupation.

Chief/Educator Level: (Nurse IV) - At this level, emphasis is placed on strategic planning and administrative/managerial responsibilities. The Chief Nurse Anesthetist /Administrative Nurse Anesthetist makes recommendations that may significantly affect the content, interpretation, or development of VA policies or programs concerning critical matters or major issues within the anesthesia arena. They are assigned positions/studies where limited guidance exists as to the method of evaluation for the potential experience identified or, where possible, new experiences need to be identified. Regularly provides anesthesia care in unusually extensive and complex surgical procedures that are of prolonged duration and involve high-risk patients, including development of individualized programs of post-op anesthesia care. A specific assigned Chief Nurse Anesthetist/Administrative Nurse Anesthetist may be a first line supervisor and/or have administrative responsibility for anesthesia staff. Individuals assigned to this level generally require approximately 5 years of progressively responsible leadership assignments in clinical, administrative, educational and/or research related to nurse anesthesia practice.

Preferred Experience:Experience in cardiac surgery.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Reference: VA Handbook 5005, Chapter II, Appendix G7 - Nurse Anesthetist Qualification Standards. This qualification standard can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:?, The Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 10 lbs., sitting (4 hours), standing (2 hours), walking (2 hours), bending/stooping (1 hour), twisting (1/2 hour), simple grasping (4 hours), fine manipulation (6 hours), reaching above the shoulder (1/2 hour), and operating machinery (1/2 hour).For additional information on Physical Standards please see VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
