Mail Clerk

This position performs work related to the processing of incoming or outgoing mail and the performance of related work requiring the application of established mail methods and procedures, knowledge of prescribed systems for governing the flow and control of communications, and knowledge of the organization and functions of the operating unit or units serviced in order to route mail of various types and a general nature. Routes mail by general subject matter. Performs various related clerical duties such as facing, sacking, bundling, wrapping of outgoing materials, sorting bulk mail from post office, and performing such additional mail handling tasks as rerouting misdirected mail, date stamping, counting mail, screening for priority items, preparing routing and control forms, maintaining an up-to-date directory by name, room and telephone number, organization, and forwarding address for use in work assignment.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/28/2017.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-4 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-3. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Minimum Requirements for the GS-4: Candidates must have one full year of experience at the GS-3 level OR two full years of education beyond the high school level.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position:

1. Ability to complete mail work.
2. Ability to complete reproduction work.
3. Ability to communicate orally and maintain effective working relationship with all levels of staff.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Work is physical. May involve considerable walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of bulky boxes and other material, usually not to exceed 50 pounds. Requires pushing carts for a long period of time. Selectee will be required to pass a physical exam.
