NOTE: THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT POSITION: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.

This position is located within the Allied Health Service/Nutrition and Food Service/Food Production Unit at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. In this position, you will work along or with a higher grade cook to prepare and cook a variety of items including regular and special diet entrees and dessert items. Duties include:

  • Print out food production worksheets;
  • Weigh, measure and assemble ingredients for regular and modified menu items.
  • Prepare food by peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, etc.;
  • Make a variety of dessert items such as cobblers, cakes and brownies;
  • Prepare soups, stocks, broths, gravies, cream/other sauces and puddings without use of packaged mixes;
  • Roast, boil, bake, fry, boil, steam, etc.;
  • Cook large quantities and rapidly blast chill food items as needed;
  • Maintain accurate food inventories;
  • Portion food for distribution.

Work Schedule: This is an On-Call position - 7 Days Weeks

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent performs work requiring light to moderate physical effort. Subject to continuous standing and walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds with assistance.

The work is performed in the kitchen that is generally well lighted, but often hot and noisy. The cook is exposed to steam, heat and odors from cooking and cleaning. There is a danger of slipping on floors from food or beverages and from floors recently mopped. Incumbent is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walking-in refrigeration and freezing units. May be unknowingly exposed to patients who have contagious disease.
