Job Description
Nursing Assistant

      The Nursing Assistant (Emergency Department) performs a variety of nursing care duties, ranging from routine to difficult and moderately specialized in nature, for patients receiving emergency care and treatment at the Atlanta VAMC.The NA works in a fast paced, high intensity environment and assists doctors and nurses in the care and treatment of patients and the performance of diagnostic examinations. Duties include, but are not limited to:

      - Performing treatment procedures according to written standards including basic wound care, soaks, wound irrigations and applications of hot and cold packs; Inserting and irrigating indwelling Foley catheters and safely maintaining closed urinary drainage systems; Performing procedures such as veni-puncture, glucose testing and EKGs; Setting up equipment needed for oxygen therapy and monitoring the flow rate;

      - Observing changes in patients' condition and promptly reporting these changes to the RN; Recognizing malfunctioning and infiltrated intravenous infusions and immediately reporting these situations to the nurse; Performing breathalyzer test and reporting results to the nurse;

      - Identifying patient data to avoid medical errors related to mistaken identity of patient and ensuring that the patient identification on armband matches patient under consideration; Actively participating in team and medical center in-service educational programs; Providing emotional support for patients and their families;

      -Reporting and assisting in emergency events; Taking and recording patient's vital signs and reporting results to the nurse; Measuring intake and output and documenting results; Setting up or reprocessing reusable medical equipment; and

      - Following Life Safety Management Procedures; Reporting safety hazards, accidents, and injuries; Following security policies and procedures; Following Emergency Preparedness Plan; and Complying with federal, state, and local environmental requirement.

Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday,Available shifts: 7:30AM-8:00PM; 11:30AM-8:00PM; 11:30AM-12:00AM; 3:30PM-12:00AM; 3:30PM-4:00AM; 7:30PM-8:00AM; AND 11:30PM-8:00AM.Holidays and weekendsare required.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a Nursing Assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. To be credible, Nursing Assistant experience must must be documented on the application or resume and verified in employment reference, or throughout other independent means. YOU MUST SUBMIT DOCUMENTATION SHOWING YOU MEET THIS REQUIREMENT.

English Language Proficiency.NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations: GS-5 NA (Full Performance Level)

Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below;

OR

Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND

Demonstrated KSAs:

1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.

2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.

3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Preferred qualifications: Experience performing ancillary diagnostic testing; Experience directly observing behavioral health patients (inventory of belongings and personal equipment); Experience assisting nurses and doctors with procedures that will facilitate patient care; BLS certification;

Assignment. This is the full performance level for NAs. NAs at this grade level function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home or community living care or other patients/residents who are in acute, sub-acute or chronic states of illness. The distinguishing factor is that patient/resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. NAs at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The Nursing Assistant work includes lifting, walking, pushing, stooping, reaching, standing, bending, repositioning patients, or similar activities. The work also includes long periods of moving throughout the work unit.
