Job Description
Nurse Manager (PTSD)

The Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who holds twenty-four hour accountability for the management of a defined area of organized nursing services or resident care unit within the Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). The incumbent is a first level-nursing manager who functions under the direction and guidance of the Chief Nurse Ambulatory Care Services (Mental Health) in providing clinical and administrative leadership. He/she uses the nursing process to achieve identified goals for VA Medical Center. As a nursing leader, the Nurse Manager is responsible for the management of Nursing Practice and Nursing Operations within their defined areas of responsibility. He/she facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to high quality, cost effective and customer focused health care.

The Nurse Manager (PTSD) is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling patient care programs and staff activities in the PTSD Unit. This unit has and does care for veterans, who are suffering from PTSD related to being in combat or being exposed to combat. This unit cares and has cared for combat veterans from World War II up to and including the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. PTSD veterans suffer from a number of symptoms including: agitation, irritability, hostility, hypervigilance, self-destructive behavior, social isolation, flashbacks, fear, severe anxiety, and mistrust, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, guilt, loneliness, insomnia, nightmares, night-terrors, emotional detachment and/or intrusive thoughts. Many PTSD veterans also suffer from comorbidities such as: traumatic brain injuries, suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, gambling disorders, and/or substance use disorders.

In the PTSD Unit, the Nurse Manger is responsible for residents. He/she is responsible for fostering the concepts of cultural transformation. He/she provides leadership in day-to-day operations and provides input into strategic planning process in the attainment of organizational goals. The Nurse Manager keeps staff informed of Clinical Center/ Service Lines goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communication in a timely manner. The incumbent provides timely information regarding emergencies, unusual occurrences or issues that impact on nursing practice or operations to the Chief Nurse Ambulatory Care Services (Mental Health).


Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm May include weekends and off tour duty for patient care needs.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Mental Health Related Experience

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
