Job Description
Physician (Neuro-Otologist)

Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) is recruiting an individual with proven leadership skills to serve as a Neuro-Otologist. We are currently providing care through a system of clinics across Southeast Louisiana. Surgical care is provided in the outpatient setting through an Ambulatory Procedure Unit (APU) and in the inpatient setting through innovative, collaborative arrangements with our academic and community partners and other Veteran Affairs facilities. Currently, the surgical programs are providing a wide range of surgical care and graduate medical education in collaboration with our academic affiliates. Surgical specialties will include Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, OB/GYN, Urology, Cardiothoracic, Vascular, Plastic, ENT, Audiology and Oral Surgery.

The Neuro-Otologist will expand the current Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) program and fully participate in the activation of the new hospital for surgery. The successful candidate will have a record of accomplishments clinically and academically. Provides a full range of diagnostic, therapeutic and minor (mostly bed-side or clinic) procedures for patients in the outpatient and inpatient. Provides consultative services on patients referred from other sections of the medical center and other VA's, provides emergency ENT services as assigned. Coordinates and communicates care between VA facilities and other healthcare facilities outside of the VA system. Performs administrative components of patient care management such as: provides dictation of progress notes, operative reports, discharge summaries, and consultative services for inpatients and outpatients. Responds to patient telephone calls, informs patients of test results, and renews prescriptions. Basic computer skills are required using the computerized system of VISTA and CPRS for ordering and entries into the electronic medical record.

TheNeuro-Otologistis expected to perform the following duties:

  • Provide direct out-patient, in-patient, and minor (mostly bed-side) procedure related to ear, nose, and throat (ENT) cases to patients. Order and interprets laboratory test, and X-rays to complete medical facts on ENT cases.
  • Participate in the clinics quality assurance, utilization review, risk management, and peer review activities.
  • Examine patients, makes diagnosis, and administers appropriate treatment to ENT patients.

TOUR OF DUTY: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practicemedicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

It is preferred that the candidatebe board certified or eligible and have expertise in ENT.

The incumbent will take part in continuing medical education (as defined by licensure), and quality assurance activities. The highest degree of good judgment, ethical behavior and professional demeanor is required at all times in the incumbent's contacts with patients, his peers and other employees.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organization (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.
