Job Description
Patient Safety Coordinator

The Patient Safety Coordinator is aligned to Quality Management under direct supervision of the Patient Safety Manager. The incumbent adheres to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. He or she assists in the planning, implementing, evaluating and improving holistic care delivery using collaborative strategies with others while ensuring compliance with the facility mission and nationally recognized standards of care. The incumbent serves as an educational resource for employees on Patient Safety as well as issues relating to injury prevention. He or she helps design, implement and evaluate prevention strategies for Patient Safety. The Patient Safety Coordinator assists in the development and administration of a facility patient safety program by establishing guidelines and criteria to assist staff in creating a culture of patient safety. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate computer literacy and the use of Microsoft Office applications, data tracking and the analysis of feedback. He or she must also be willing to work collaboratively with all levels of health care professionals, services and departments.

This IS NOT a Bargaining Unit Position

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

U.S. citizenship.

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

Nurse II - BSN or Associates Degree or Diploma in Nursing and bachelors degree in a related field with approximately 2-3 years of experienceOR Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN or bachelors in a related field [if MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN required] with approximately 1-2 yearsof experienceOR Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in related field with no required experience requirement.

Reference:VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements:Moderate lifting 15-44 pounds, light carrying under 15 pounds, straight pulling (.5 hours), pulling hand over hand (.5 hours), pushing (.5 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (4 hours), standing (4 hours), repeated bending, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, both eyes required, hearing (aid permitted), mental and emotional stability; these physical requirements are in accordance with HRML No. 05-12-02, Employment of People with Disabilities, Including Under Schedule A, 5 CFR 213.3102(u)

Influenza Prevention Program Statement : Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities.
