Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts: Days shiftsandEvening shifts, Weekends and Holidays included.

Position Description Title/PD#: Food Service Worker/629-07137-A (Position Description is available for review in the Human Resources Office)

This is a BARGAINING unit position.

The Food Service Worker, WG-7408-4 position is assigned to the Nutrition and FoodService of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS).Incumbent is responsible for the communication and interaction with patients to facilitate the meal operating process. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide the patient with basic information regarding the meal operating procedures.
  • Communicate with patient/family to obtain food preferences and/or food allergies.
  • Interact with patients, family members, and hospital staff to answer questions and provide information on modified diets.
  • Prepares food trays according to modified diets.
  • Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items on trays.
  • Work in the call center to answer phone calls; enter meal orders into computer software; contact patients who have missed meals; process tray tickets to ensure all inpatients receive a meal tray.
  • Prepare uncooked food items such as Jell-O, salad, sandwiches, etc.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a food service worker without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

1. Work Practices

2. Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)

2. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.

3. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

4. Knowledge of materials.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Work performed under pressure with inflexible deadlines and frequent interruptions. Incumbent must concentrate for lengthy periods of time. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 40 pounds frequently. Performs tasks requiring repetitive twisting and bending. This position is subject to continuous standing, walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This work primarily performed in a kitchen area, where standing and walking, with some bending stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling is necessary. Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other employees. Some activities are sedentary, requiring some work at a computer terminal.

Influenza Prevention Program Statement : Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.
