This is a BARGAINING unit position.

The Health Aid, GS-0640-3 position is assigned to the Nutrition and FoodService of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS).Incumbent is responsible for the assistingveterans and their familieswith planning acceptable menus, orientatingand educating veterans and their families on Nutrition and Food Service procedures, implementing physician prescribed diet orders, and contacting patients about food acceptance and advising them regarding simple diet modificationSpecific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implement the physicians prescribed diet order.
  • Guides Veterans on making appropriate selections in accordance with their prescribed diet taking into account the given medical needs, allergies, and personal preferences.
  • Guides Veterans through the meal ordering process of even the most complex orders such as the various renal, heart healthy, fluid restricted, texture modified, renal, cardiac/sodium restricted, diabetic, etc.
  • Prepares food trays according to modified diets.
  • Extract patient' diets from computer software and create reports
  • Enters meal orders into the computer software.
  • Prepare uncooked food items such as Jell-O, salad, sandwiches, etc.
  • Collects data in quality assurance, dietetic management, and nutrition-related studies.
  • Contacts patients who have missed meals per Nutrition and Food Service policy
  • Process tray tickets to ensure all inpatients receive a meal tray who are designated as non-select by their provider.
  • Prepares food items, beverages and/or food trays for modified diets.
  • Inspects the work of other employees to ensure the trays are properly prepared and identify obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items.
  • Complete tasks in a busy, sometimes noisy, office with frequent interruptions and rigid deadlines.
  • Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
  • Consistently communicates and treats customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
  • Adapts communication to suit customer and age group needs to ensure understanding.
  • Provides appropriate assistance to unique age groups, as well as to family, friends, or others.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Basic Modified diets, Therapeutic diets, and Diabetic diets
  • Operation of Office Equipment
  • Planning and Organizing
  • Skill in Communication
  • Flexibility and Prioritization

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: The regular and recurring physical demands require no special physical qualifications. The regular and recurring work requires the ability to move around the office and carry light items such as office files.

Influenza Prevention Program Statement : Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work primarily is an office setting. However, due to the nature of work within NFS, the
incumbent will be required to be in the kitchen area which involves: exposure to extreme temperature in production and refrigerated storage, humidity, wet floors and various hazards from food service equipment and noise found in an institutional food service environment.
