Job Description
Physical Therapist

These positions are located in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service, Denver, Colorado. As a health care professional, the therapist works with all aspects of outpatient physical therapy evaluation, assessment and treatment. Follows the service/section policies and is responsible for evaluating referred patients and establishing and executing treatment plans that include a full range of complex treatment procedures and modalities. Must be comfortable with a wide variety of diagnosis and patient complexity in the realm of chronic and acute pain, geriatric and adult musculoskeletal dysfunction, orthopedic and neurological disorders, and functional mobility. Evaluates and interprets information from a physical evaluation and integrates this information into physical therapy recommendations. Works closely with the treatment team and provides treatment plans that are designed to restore individual patients to their highest possible functional level and to enhance their adaptive capacities through the use of physical measures, activities or assistive devices. May facilitate an evaluation for a patient requiring special equipment or device such as a wheel chair, or orthotics by referring the patient to the appropriate team members or clinics. Provides education and instruction which may include HEP, body mechanics, use of gait aides to the patient and appropriate family members/caregivers and and/or significant others.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 - 4:30 with the possibility of flexible tour times, and some Saturday coverage. Candidate must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be placed, detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Graduation from a degree program in physical therapy from an approved college or university approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The CAPTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit entry-level physical therapy program.
  • Licensure. Current, full, active and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or
    Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • English Language Proficiency. PTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by VA
    Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3j.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two to three years' experience as a physical therapist in an outpatient clinic.
  • Specific clinical experience in manual therapy techniques related to treatment of chronic pain syndromes of the
    spine, acute injuries of the spine, myofascial pain syndromes, as well as orthopedic conditions.
  • Specific clinical experience in treatment of extremity problems in the shoulder, knees or ankles.
  • Specific clinical experience providing treatment for post-surgical orthopedic conditions including patients with lower extremity amputations.
  • Clinical experience with treatment of outpatients with such diagnoses as deconditioning from extended illness, CVA, MS, Parkinson's, Spinal Cord injury, Traumatic brain injury etc. who have rehabilitation needs.
  • Clinical experience with patients ranging from 18 to 80+ years.
  • Clinical experience has taken place within the past 5 years to be considered for this position.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice physical therapy with a high level of quality and independence.
  • Experience supervising clinical work of Physical Therapy Assistants and/or Physical Therapy Students.

Grade Determinations:

GS-11 Physical Therapist: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the next lower grade; or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in physical therapy or a directly related field. In addition to completion of 1 year of progressively difficult experience comparable to the next lower grade level, PTs assigned to this position must fully demonstrate the following KSAOs:
  • Knowledge of contemporary and evidence-based PT practice
  • Ability to interpret clinician prescriptions and referrals
  • Skill in communicating, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professions to facilitate the multidisciplinary treatment process
  • Skill in utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide direct patient care
  • Knowledge of clinical signs and symptoms to make appropriate referrals for further medical attention/assessment as indicated

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 11.Physical Requirements: Physical Therapy is a vocation that requires regular and recurring physical exertion with long periods of standing, bending, walking and periods of assisting patients with transfers. This hospital has a policy of NO PATIENT LIFT, meaning that mechanical lifts are available to assist with safe patient transfers without lifting patients directly. Demonstration of various physical therapy procedures requires good physical conditioning. Physical therapy also requires manual dexterity to manipulate tools and equipment with activities such as assembling equipment with the use of hand tools such as screwdriver or pliers, and power tools such as a power chop saw. Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling (up to 1 hour); Pushing (1 - 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Hearing (aid permitted).
