Job Description
Medical Care Transportation Technician

The Medical Care Transportation Technician will be working at the Veterans Healthcare Administration in Amarillo, TX. This position is located in the Health Administration Service, Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), and Ambulance Service.

Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Performs ongoing patient care duties during patient transport and minor triage within the prehospital arena.
  • Makes independent decisions based on assessment and management skills for prehospital patients.
  • Performs assessments to obtain patient health history, complaints, medications, status of patient's neurological system cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills, and level of consciousness for the purpose of safe transport.
  • Identifies health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status during transport.
  • Uses radio equipment and follow approved procedures to communicate with and transmit information to obtain and relay information to and from dispatchers and health care providers.
  • Conducts or assists with training of personnel in CPR, basic and advanced emergency medical care techniques.
  • Performs thorough safety inspections and operator maintenance of transport vehicles.
  • Operates one or more types of transport vehicles with gross vehicle weight of up to 19,500 pounds.
  • Determines the most efficient route taking into consideration traffic patterns and destinations.
  • Assists in lifting and carrying patient into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facility.
  • Utilizes various tools and equipment to transport patients.
WORK SCHEDULE: Required to work as needed to support patient care and transportation services; Rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays based on the agency needs "When Applicable employee's will receive Night differential, Sunday pay, Holiday pay"

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Possess a Valid (unrestricted) State Driver's License. (We cannot accept pictures, therefore, do not submit a copy of your driver's license. This will be verified by the hiring facility if interviewed).

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

In addition to meeting the Selective Placement Factors, Valid Drivers License, and English Language Proficiency, you must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

One (1) year of specialized experience and education directly related to this position. To be creditable, this experience and education must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service that is directly related to the position. Specialized experience includes: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Specialized experience for this position includes: performing ongoing patient care during patient transport, performing minor triage while making decisions on assessment of patient; obtaining patient health history, complaints, medications, and identifying health related conditions that may impact health status during transport; administering Basic and Advanced Life Support care (BLS/ALS); using radio equipment to communicate with dispatch and healthcare providers; inspecting and operating patient transport vehicles; using various tools and equipment to safely transport patients. (This experience must be directly and clearly supported by your resume to be creditable) -OR-
Successfully completed Six months of Graduate education or an internship may be used to substitute the specialized experience. Only education directly related to this position is creditable. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) -OR-
An equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

The work requires some moving and transporting of light items such as supplies, papers, books, trays and equipment on a regular and recurring basis. No special physical demands are required to do the work. The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning patients, or similar activities. The work requires regular and recurring ability to physically control or defend against emotionally ill patients. Guidance in the Introduction to the Position Classification Standards states that regular and recurring duties may be performed in a continuous, uninterrupted manner, or at recurring intervals. The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients. It is not anticipated that the work would regularly require the incumbent to defend himself/herself from physical attack.

This factor considers the risks and discomforts that may be imposed by various physical surroundings or job situations. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to infection and contagious diseases. Special gloves, gowns, or masks are required as safety precautions. The work environment involves a high risk of regular and recurring exposure to potentially dangerous situations such as noxious gases, fumes and explosives. There are regular and recurring situations where physical attack by patients requires safety training. On a regular and recurring basis, employee is exposed to infection and contagious diseases requiring the use of universal precautions. As part of the Rapid Response Team the incumbent may be exposed to all types of weather conditions, and face risks and discomforts at the scene of accidents, to include the possibility of noxious fumes and dangerous substances, requiring the employee to comply with special safety and health precautions and/or to use protective gear.
