Job Description
Physician (Chief of Staff)

The West Texas VA Health Care System in Big Spring, Texas is seeking a board certified Physician to serve as the Chief of Staff (COS). This executive position is multi-faceted and fully responsible to the Director for programs of patient care. Key qualities include leadership, strategic planning, matrix-teamwork building, quality improvement and credentialing and privileging. The ideal candidate will have experience fostering inter-institutional relationships in an academic setting along with proven managerial skills in a health care environment. Responsibilities include the supervision and oversight of clinical operations. The COS formulates and recommends plans for a comprehensive program of medical care, develops the requirements of staff, facilities, equipment and supplies needed to carry forward such a integrated program, utilizing necessary reviews and controls. He/she must possess an extensive record of leadership as a clinician and exceptional operations and financial management abilities in a tertiary care setting. Knowledge of Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies is essential. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the COS must be a skilled interpersonal communicator and have ability to promote medical staff excellence as well as meet performance measure goals while utilizing the most cost-effective methodology within the context of serving as member of a healthcare network management team.

RECRUITMENT/RELOCATION INCENTIVE MAY BE AUTHORIZED

Relocation Expenses: Relocation Expenses are authorized (Permanent Change of Station (PCS) authorizes relocation of household goods.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday- Friday, 8::00 am - 4:30 pm and may varybased on the needs of the organization.

FUNCTIONAL STATEMENT TITLE: Physician #000000 (Chief of Staff)

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Licensure and Registration - Current, full,and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Approved schools are: Schools of medicineaccredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted,
  • or (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

Licensure and Registration (Residency Training)

  • (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
  • (2) Other residencies of their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.Proficiency in spoken and written English.

The following requirements for this position are as follows:

  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine/Family Practice is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work ismostly sedentary and is performed in a health care setting for treating patients with a variety of medical problems. Normal safety precautions and practices arerequired for working in a healthcareenvironment. Other physical demands include reaching, bending, stretching, walking, and carrying light loads of supplies. The position often entails long periods of sitting at a computer, rigid deadlines, the need for a high degree of accuracy, high stress situations, and the ability to adapt work plans based on hospital needs.
