Job Description
Registered Nurse-Day Surgery/OR/PACU

This Registered Nurse position is in the Day Surgery/Operating Room/ and PACU for the Amarillo VA Health Care System in Amarillo, Texas. Operating Room experience is a must to successfully perform the duties of this position. The RNwill be responsible for Pre-Intra and Post-surgical patients. As a VA Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans. Duties includebut not limited to the following:

  • Being responsible and accountable for the management of veterans in the perioperative period; this commonly includes ward admission, anesthesia or sedation, surgery, and recovery.
  • Upon admission, continuously collects and documents the Veterans' health status to identify actual or potential problems.
  • Develops and implements nursing actions to ensure optimal preparation of the Veteran for the procedure.
  • Provides intra-operative care throughout the procedure, by assisting the anesthesia provider and surgical team in their efforts.
  • Documents the care provided using established guidelines, and ensures the safety of the surgical suite.
  • When required, performs duties as a surgical scrub technician.
  • Provides post anesthesia care for Veterans after receiving spinal or general anesthesia, and minimal to deep sedation. These duties include airway management, physiological monitoring, and implementing treatments to maintain the Veterans hemodynamics.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hemodynamic medications, positioning techniques, and use of medical equipment to monitor and interpret responses to treatments and therapies.
  • Performs appropriate treatments as ordered accurate and timely.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by individualized plan of care, and educates the Veteran and their family.
  • Demonstrates abilities to recognize the need for resuscitative efforts, and performs according to established guidelines.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, family and client facility staff.
  • Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the adult or elderly patient's and family's diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights of self-determination.
  • Maintains all competencies and completes mandatory education.
  • Successful applicant will be responsible for care of perioperative veterans.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty consists of variable 8-hour tours on week days, Monday - Friday. The tours begin at 0600, 0700, 0800, and 0900, and vary from week to week. Some tours include time on call to ensure the facility maintains 24 hour surgical coverage.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. *The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (licensure)as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

    GRADE DETERMINATIONS:The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

    • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
    • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
    • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
    • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
    • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or in a related field;
    • Minimum of 2 years clinical nursing experience;
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
    • Able to work independently and in groups;
    • Possess a "team attitude";
    • Strong clinical skills and able to work autonomously;
    • Current BLS certification;
    • Current ACLS certification or completed within 6 months of employment.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
