Job Description
Medical Technician

The Medical Technician position provides phlebotomy and diagnostic testing support at the Colorado Springs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) of the Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). The Medical Technician serves under the general supervision of the Nurse Director of the Pathology and Laboratory Service of the Easter Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). The primary function is to obtain blood specimens by venipuncture from properly identified patients for laboratory testing. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

Phlebotomy

  • Provides proper collection and handling of venous blood.
  • Performs collection of blood by using vacutainer system, syringe, butterfly, and capillary finger sticks.
  • Ensures identification of patients by checking armbands and ID cards.
  • Ensures the computer print-out labels match the armband information.
Specimen Processing
  • Uses the VA computer system when processing specimens.
  • Protects the security of the computer system and maintains patient security.
  • Performs toxicology testing such as urine drug screens.
  • Performs alcohol testing when a breathalyzer is ordered.
  • Responsible for ordering of inventory for the stock room and storing supplies.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Ability to perform venous access procedures to obtain required quantities of specimens needed for test requested with labeling, preservation, special handling of select specimens, storage, and correct patient identification prior to drawing. Ability to use a computer to perform work in labs and radiology menu selections.

OR

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements: Work is performed in both sitting and standing positions. Standing and bending for a prolonged period. Walking and lifting up to 20 pounds is required. Kneeling and climbing stairs is also required. Work requires manual dexterity and a large degree of concentration. Working at a fast paste and the ability to distinguish color and color intensity is a must.
