Job Description
Physician (Psychiatrist)

The Psychiatrist is assigned to the Mental Health - Psychiatry Service of the Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS) stationed at one of the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Colorado Springs, CO or Pueblo, CO. The incumbent may also be required to travel occasionally to other Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) locations or to the VA Medical Center (VAMC) Denver, CO. The Psychiatrist practices independently within a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals, and reports directly to the Associate Chief of Staff, Mental Heath Service. Considered as a Staff Psychiatrist, the incumbent performs face-to-face and telemental health care services to veteran patients. Major duties and responsibilities are, but not limited to the following:

  • Patient examination, diagnosis, treatment, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and general adult psychiatric care.
  • Manage psychiatric emergencies, substance abuse, and mental health disorders.
  • Works with multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Accurate and timely medical record documentation.
  • Responsible for developing positive relationships with staff, patients and their families, and the community.
  • Participates in clinic meetings and peer reviews.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

  • United States Citizenship (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.)
  • Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
    (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
    (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
    (For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.)
  • Licensure. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
    (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
    (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
  • English Language Proficiency. Must be proficiency in spoken and written English.

This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.Physical Requirements: The work requires patience and emotional control due to the intrinsic nature of psychiatric practice. Long periods of standing, walking, and sitting; light carrying of objects (up to 15 pounds); reaching above shoulders; correctable near or far vision; good hearing (aid permitted); able to work closely with others.
