Job Description
Housekeeping Aid

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for7 Full-time, Permanent,Housekeeping Aids. This position will be located in the Environmental Management Services (EMS). As aHousekeeping Aid, you are responsible for the following duties to include, but not limited to:

  • Collecting, transporting and disposing of regular waste, regulated medical waste, and recyclable materials to designated locations.
  • Collecting contaminated, soiled linen and transporting to proper location.
  • Delivering clean linen to designated storage locations.
  • Maintain tile and carpeted floors daily including preventative maintenance.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting patient care areas following special procedures for spores and drug-resistant organisms.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting restroom areas and replenishing proper supplies daily.
  • Cleaning walls, hand rails, elevators, pictures, display cabinets, and polishing furniture.
  • Washing door, windows and sills.
  • Changing shower curtains and cubicle curtains on a scheduled basis.
  • Cleaning stairwells, balconies, elevators, steps, docks, and trash pickup points.
  • Scrubs, strips and polishes floors using manual and power cleaning equipment.
  • Removing snow/ice from doorways.
  • Cleaning spills including potentially biomedical and hazardous materials.
  • Moving furniture.
  • Setting up rooms.

Work Schedule: Various tours of duty including days, nights, holidays, weekends may be required. Additional information will be given during the interview.

Your background must demonstrate experience in all aspects of housekeeping aid including, but not limited to: collecting, transporting, disposal of waste materials, using cleaning equipment, and cleaning. This experience and/or training must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.
The screen-out element for this position is:

  • Job Element #1 Ability to do the work of housekeeping Aid without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  • Job Element #25-A, Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
  • Job Element # 75-B, Ability to interpret instructions (specifications, etc. other than blueprints)
  • Job Element #81, Ability to use and maintain tools and Equipment
  • Job Element #86, Dexterity and Safety

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Incumbent must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical effort over an eight-hour period of time, including continuous standing, bending, lifting and climbing. Sustained physical activity involves turning, stooping, crouching, pushing, rubbing and reaching. Objects weighing in excess of fifty (50) pounds must be lifted or moved occasionally.

WORKING CONDITIONS:?, Work is normally performed in a clean, well-lighted, heated and ventilated building. Incumbent is exposed to vibrations from operating power equipment, skin irritations from chemical cleaning solutions and disagreeable odors.
