Job Description
Claims Assistant

The incumbent will work as a member of one of the teams in the Veterans Service Center (Triage, Pre-Determination, Rating, Post-Determination, Appeals, or the Public Contact):

Serves as the primary contact for the veteran and his/her representative or advocate for compensation and pension claims.
Explains benefit programs and entitlement criteria and will be expected to perform core duties aligned with the assigned team's mission.

? Responsible for the care and maintenance of the claims folders; analyzes the claim and determines if the disposition of the claims and and control action has been appropriately identified.

? Develops straightforward evidence in conjunction with claims, establishes or updates control action, faciliates work flow between the team and other Veteran Service Center (VSC) teams.

? Independently performs weekly WIPP (work-in progress program) reviews, prepares reports of contact, receives, opens, reviews, and date stamps all incoming correspondence, processes dependency questionaires, develops and assembles all evidence required for burial and plot claims.

? Schedules all requests for hearings, explains basic VA benefit programs and entitlement criteria, provides administrative support to the team, and performs other related duties as directed.

Work Schedule: Standard 5 day, 8 hour, full time (40 hours a week) schedule; Monday - Friday, actual hours to be determined.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

The grade progression for this position is GS-05/06.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one year of specialized experience (or substitutable education) equivalent to the next lower grade level as described below

GS-05 LEVEL: You must meet at lease one of the qualifications described below.

* At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal Service performing the following duties:providing basic clerical and customer service skills, and the ability to research and review available records/documents and piece together the pertinent information from a variety of sources.

OR

* A Bachelor's degree (in any field) or four (4) years of education above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree.

OR

* A combination of experience as described in "1" and education as described in "2" which totals at least one year. [To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.]

A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

GS-06 LEVEL: You must meet 1 described below.

1. At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service performing the following duties: explaining basic state and/or Federal benefits programs, providing advance clerical and customer service skills, and the ability to research and review available legal and medical records/documents and piece together pertinent information from a variety of sources.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary. However, there may be some walking, standing, and carrying of light items such as papers, books, claims folders, and files from one desk to another or for returning to storage. Carts are utilized to carry large number of claims
