Job Description
Food Service Worker

This position is located within the Martinsburg, West Virginia VA Medical Center, Nutrition and Food Service. The incumbent will perform duties that require knowledge of food service operations and advanced food delivery systems including food preparation, food portioning, tray assembly, delivery and pickup, ware washing and sanitation. Tasks include those with several steps or a sequence of tasks that require attention to work operations. Duties may be performed in the main 500 kitchen, the 502 domiciliary cafeteria, and in the following patient care areas: acute, long term, intermediate, specialty clinic, mental health and domiciliary. Set procedures are followed in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follow an established sequence of work. Major duties include 1) Prepares, Sets up and Serves Food, 2) Cart Transport, 3) Delivery/Retrieval of Trays and Nourishments, 4) Cleans, Dishes, Equipment and Facility, 5) Receiving, and 6) Other duties as assigned.

Work schedule: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday (6am to 10am or 6:30am to 10:30am or 7am to 11am) and Tuesday and Wednesday off

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Do you have the ability to perform the duties of a cook without more than normal supervision, including preparing a variety of menu items for regular and/or modified diets in accordance with approved standardized recipes, monitoring food temperatures during preparation, cooking, and holding stages, utilizing Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) methodology and tenants of food safety to prevent foodborne illness and food contamination, and operating specialized equipment to cook food in large quantities and to rapidly chill and store the prepared items under refrigeration for long periods of time?

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: This position requires moderate to heavy physical effort. The employee is subject to continuous standing/walking; frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. frequent lifting of objects weighing up 40 pounds unassisted and occasional lifting of objects weighing more than 40 pounds, assisted is required. It also requires pushing loaded tray carts weighing up to 900 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in areas where floors may become wet from spillage or mopping and present a potential safety hazard requiring caution in movement. The employee is subject to temperature extremes from the hot kitchen to refrigeration/freezer units and loading docks. Steam and heat from dishwashing may cause occasional uncomfortable temperatures and humidity. There is exposure to cut, burns, bruises and injuries from machines.

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.
